My partner and I had a wonderful meal at Gilbey’s this week. The food was utterly delicious and the service was outstanding, attentive, warm and friendly without being intrusive at all - it was a special night for us, made all the more special by the food, ambience and staff. We highly recommend it.

I went to Gilbey's on Saturday night and had a fabulous meal. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food delicious. I have never been offered loose leaf camomile tea before - next stop is the website to see if I can buy it. We had such a lovely evening that we booked for a Sunday lunch and were not disappointed, again with excellent food and the waitresses made you feel like you were old friends. The next time I am in Amersham I will definitely be visiting again and would recommend the restaurant to anyone who asks.

Gilbey’s is one of those rare special places I've been going on and off for almost 10 years now and it never fails to deliver. The food is gorgeous, the setting, especially if you get to sit outside on a rare good British summer evening, is relaxing and the staff are an almost a perfect balance of caring, friendly and efficient. As a venue for birthdays, special occasions or a ‘we haven't been for a while’ visits its ideal and loved by friends and family. Recently the food has got a little more adventurous but is still fabulous and the wine is constantly delicious. I'd hate to see it change and is one of those places you'd want to wrap up and take with you if you ever left the area. Long may it reign!

Review by Seven thirty for Eight Supper Club (10 July 2007)

I used the restaurant for my first ever event back in 2005 and we have returned twice since then. On that occasion we had the private dining room upstairs, which only seats twelve people but perfect for ten. The table was dressed beautifully, soft music on the CD player, flowers at the window, which were open to let in the summer air. It was perfect.

With the ambience set we settled down for a fabulous Sunday lunch with the biggest Yorkshire pudding I have ever seen. The food was superb and the service, friendly and attentive as always. I cannot fault the restaurant, I have never had a bad meal, they will do their very best to accommodate your requests. What more could you ask for? Do put it on your lists of places to try, it's a good one to drive out to and enjoy the surroundings.

A friend and I visited Gilbey's Old Amersham for the first time on 1st April. May I just say that the waitress was courteous and the food was fresh, delicious and well presented? The price was also very reasonable. We hope to visit again in the not too distant future.

I had my first experience of this restaurant with my boyfriend last year and totally fell in love with the place, the food is nothing short of amazing and the wine list is fantastic. I was so impressed that I booked a table for the New Year with my sister, her partner and my parents. My advice is get booked in now for an excellent meal, although not before me for this New Year :-)

Further to my review about 2 years ago I have experienced a less than perfect service on a couple of occasions. This is unfortunate, as 'normally' the service is warm and charming.

I formed the opinion that they were a little short staffed and therefore were too stretched to give good service. Food was still brilliant, but it was rather slapped down and the service was slow.

I also managed to get two bottles of 'corked' wine, rather amazing in this day and age. I did complain to Gilbeys and unfortunately was given short shrift – it has rather spoilt my opinion of this little restaurant.

Editor: I would just point out that no restaurant minds having corked wine returned normally, as it can be sent back to the supplier who will credit the place.

What a breath of fresh air, good food, good service and good value. Thanks Pip at Gilbey's.

I regard this Gilbey's as very much my local restaurant, excellent for lunch or dinner. The setting is intimate, cosy and very seductive, very easy to spend hours soaking up the feeling. The menu is a little limited, but the dishes are all excellent on the palette. A fine selection of wines to go with the menu. So reasonably priced that you could attend every day. Service is sweet and charming, with little formality, which suits the setting.

One downside is that smoking is allowed, which can sometimes be intrusive.
