The Hive Beach Cafe is a gem of a place; yes its casual and a little underplayed, but the food is great and the locale is breathtaking. The National Trust has done a great job developing a very good car park, no longer a muddy field as described earlier. The presentation of the dishes were simple and efficient, and the staff handled the large amount of covers well, although they were challenged a little when it came to clearing tables, nice folk though and very helpful. A bit crowded initially, but we got back at 2 pm after a cliff walk and the crowd had thinned, but so had some of the choices, regrettably. A great lunch nonetheless and good value too, well worth a trip to the Jurassic Coast.

For a fresh fish restaurant I expected better than the frozen preformed cod that we were served, purporting to be traditional fish 'n' chips. The drinks descried as ‘glass of Caribbean punch’ was served in disposable plastic cups, the type used for squash at a children’s party. Not recommended.

We went to the Hive Beach Café on Tuesday. There was heavy rain, and the sea was rough. The muddy car park was also full, but we had a wonderful meal. The Spanish coffee was great, which is always a good sign. I had baked cod, and my husband had scallops with chorizo, both were fantastic. The members of staff were also lovely. This place is a long way from York, but worth the trip. Maybe we can visit them once a year when we are staying in the area.

Review by Shiner (1 August 2008)

After a wonderful walk along the Dorset coastal path we found the Hive Beach Cafe - what a find! I was famished and we chose a seafood platter and watched as it was assembled in the nearby open kitchen. A fine repast indeed, accompanied with a couple of glasses of chilled Cloudy Bay. That afternoon we didn't walk further than the adjacent beach to snooze in the sun.
