The Waverley is nicely decorated with a very relaxed atmosphere and we found the staff courteous and friendly. After a lovely pre-dinner glass of Spanish Clos Mont Blanc white we were seated in the compact, but comfortable dining room. We were expecting good things, having read online reviews, but even they didn’t do Jericho’s cuisine justice. The menu is small, but perfectly formed, with something for everyone: fish, meat or veggie. The taste that Jericho’s chef can conjure from simple ingredients is sensational and hints at the quality of the produce. My salmon starter, neatly stacked with potato cake and poached egg was world-class, while I could tell by the look on my husband’s face that there was no way he was going to share a single forkful of his pigeon, caramelised onion and black-pudding ‘tower’! I stayed with fish for my main course, downing a delectable halibut and creamed-mushroom risotto, while my husband – who rarely finds a steak (un)cooked to his liking – was beaming when faced with a divine piece of Scotch fillet – his ‘blue’ request fulfilled to perfection. So far, so good. On to dessert. The portions at Jericho’s are perfect. So you don’t feel too piggy tucking into a third course. My husband travels extensively with work and counts himself as something of a world expert on crème brûlée. Jericho’s smooth, creamy offering with an added tang of poached rhubarb, served on the side, was up there with the best he assured me. My chocolate tart was fabulous – the perfect way to round off a meal. What more can I say. The food was Michelin quality at good pub prices. Nothing in our local area can beat it.

My wife and I ate at Jerichos at the Waverley last weekend. We discovered Jericho’s eight years ago, and try to visit annually. It used to be our hidden gem in the back streets of Windermere, but now at the elegant Waverley it seems busier and better than ever. The combination of tastes, textures and temperatures is something that you’d probably pay twice as much to experience in London or some other metropolis, and must be knocking on the door of a Michelin Star. What Jerichos doesn’t do is the stuffy, formal service required for a star – instead it is confident and relaxed, and so quietly efficient that you hardly notice it at all. My starter of pigeon, caramelised onion and black pudding took me straight to culinary nirvana, while my wife’s meaty winter broth tasted superb.

Some may find four choices of main course a little limiting, but I always want to try them all and the biggest problem is choosing which tasty morsel to partake of – always ensuring I choose something different for my wife so I get to try her’s too! Truth be told, I rarely get diverted away from Jericho’s tender and juicy steaks. That said, my wife’s pepper on pasta noodles ticked so many taste boxes, I might even be cured of my carnivore tendencies next time we visit. We complemented our meal with an excellent Paul Mas Viognier, then finished off with a fantastic crème brûlée for my wife and the varied cheese board for me. All in all, the meal, service and surroundings were top-class. Next time we might even stay over at the Waverley and give their impressive wine list a sterner test!

Jerichos at the Waverley is without a doubt the best restaurant in the Lake District. The food is of the finest quality; freshly prepared by the very experienced staff and the prices are so reasonable, very affordable when compared to all establishments in the locality. Wines are specially selected at very reasonable prices and the whole members of staff are a credit to the catering industry. You must eat there, I've dined in many of the best restaurants all over the world and I'm yet to find any place on par with Jerichos for quality and affordability.

I really like the new location, and still believe it to be one of the best restaurants in the Lake District. The food is great and the extensive wine list has something for every pocket. The members of staff are friendly and helpful, without being overbearing. Pricing is comparable with any good restaurant. I would suggest you try it and now it’s a double whammy as they have accommodation.

My husband and I have eaten at Jerichos for years and have followed the restaurant to the lovely new premises. We have always been made to feel very welcome and special and the food is certainly an experience - it has never been less than outstanding. We would highly recommend this restaurant for anyone holidaying in the Lake District - you'll be in for a treat.

Review by Phil Lewis (21 February 2009)

My wife and I visit the Lake District on a regular basis mainly staying with friends who own a hotel in Windermere. This Wednesday we were invited to Jerichos at the Waverley in Windermere to celebrate our friend’s 40th birthday meal. There were eight of us in total with several professionals amongst the party who are used to quality dining all over the world. As we have dined many times in the Lake District over the years and we had heard good reports of Jerichos we were looking forward to quality food, quality service all in all a quality evening. On arrival we were made to feel most welcome and offered drinks in the comfortable lounge. I think I can speak for all the party when I say we were slightly disappointed with the rather limited menu, however, five of the party chose the char grilled rib eye at £20.50 or the char grilled fillet at £22.50, two medium rare, more towards medium, two medium and one well done. When the meals arrived they were all rare to the same degree. I personally was one of the medium rare and I get quite annoyed when chefs feel they know what I want better than I do and cannot cook a steak to request. Having said that the steak was of utmost quality and as it was a 40th nobody really wanted to complain. One of the party, the well done steak, had a quiet word with the waitress, as to how it was inedible but that was all.

Moving on to the sweets and coffees, several were ordered and our friend’s partner ordered the cheese platter at £6.95, which were a few thin and small cheeses. One of the cheeses was what could only be described as revolting. We all tried this one and all agreed. He then asked the waitress, in a most civil tone, what this particular cheese was, as he did not like it and would make sure he did not order it anywhere else. She then went to ask the chef, returning to tell us in a quite offensive manner, it was brie and if he didn't like it she would fetch the chef. The chef stormed in and he too was most aggressive and lampooned us all for not complaining about the steaks and allowing them to further cook them. Also there was nothing wrong with the brie and he had served this for the last eleven years with no complains. His aggressive attack on us was uncalled for, unprofessional and to be perfectly frank, not acceptable. Brie, pronunciation: BREE notes quote: This French cheese is rich, mild, and creamy. Most of the party love brie and would certainly not have complained had the brie matched the standard specification – mild. The chef stormed out laughing, we paid the bill of £360 and left. To treat his customers with this lack of respect is nothing short of appalling. It would seem that past praises have gone to his head and he has forgotten customer service. One would dread to think what reaction we would have received had we actually complained about the steaks instead of a small piece of cheese on the cheese board. We had ordered a birthday cake for £15, which when the booking was made were told it would be complementary. It was hastily wrapped in foil and handed to us. When we got back to our friends hotel we unwrapped the cake, the foil had been tightly pushed against the icing so that the printing had all come off. This sort of childish behaviour is not what I would expect of any eating establishment let alone one with the reputation of Jerichos. The feeling all round was that the chef's attitude was totally over the top, the problem could have been solved with a smile. By adopting this manner he has now lost Jerichos a minimum of eight customers who will never return.

I recently visited Jerichos and was impressed at first with the presentation of the food, however this was clearly over priced, the wine list itself is over priced and the place lacked atmosphere. The food was nice, but the bread rolls were stale, however on questioning the waitress regarding a certain element of a dish, which tasted unusual, the lady became stand offish and brought in the chef who, rather than try and resolve the question, became defensive and aggressive towards the party, thus spoiling our evening. No effort was made by the restaurant to resolve this issue. As such I am unable to award any points for customer service.

I have eaten at Jerichos on a number of occasions, both at their old and new premises, every time the food has been fantastic, presentation excellent and service second to none. All the members of staff are polite and helpful and it is very good value for money. Having eaten in a number of places in the area, this is by far my favourite and I would go back again and again. They have an extensive wine list, which isn't over priced. I would recommend you try it.

We had eaten at the ‘old’ Jericho's, and looked forward to trying out the new location. Overall we came away under whelmed. The service is excellent, but the food was unremarkable, and the décor, especially in the lounge, was out of the ordinary.

Jericho's restaurant, now relocated at the Waverley is a beautiful place, contemporarily decorated and thoroughly relaxing. When the place is busy, the atmosphere is electric. The food is consistently beautiful and service, exemplary. Rated as one of the best restaurants in the Lake District, I recommend this place as it represents everything that's good about a high class evening out in good company.
