We have visited The Cleveland Tontine several times over the last few years. We often make a night of it and stay over. The food is superb and the service is excellent. It is such a relaxing atmosphere. My husband always looks forward to his breakfast, which is usually prepared by Eugene McCoy. We are looking forward to returning very soon.

We have spent many a night eating at the Tontine, something we look forward to each time we book. The staff are always friendly and happy to assist. The atmosphere is relaxed and the surroundings are cosy. The menu is extensive, but we tend to stick with our favourites as they never fail to deliver every time. The seafood pancake is piping hot and full of flavour, the steaks are cooked to perfection. We must admit we sometimes struggle to find room for the desserts and you have just got to as they are 'to die for' - a culinary delight. The food is consistently magnificent and that is why it is our No. 1 restaurant. We have tried lots of other restaurants in the area but they just fail to come up to The Cleveland Tontine's very high standards of service and quality cuisine. We look forward to our next visit, very soon.

It's taken over 30 years for us to get there, we were students at Teeside Poly 76-79 but far too expensive for a student, but worth the wait. We ate at the bistro today - seven of us with different tastes and appetites - and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Very relaxed atmosphere and informal service, which is a good thing in my books - we left relaxed, comfortable and very well fed. All food was beautifully presented and tasted divine and as we are very far from being students now - good value for money.

Three of us ate in the bistro on Monday at lunchtime. The waiter started out friendly but soon became cheeky, personal and touchy, which we did not like and made this obvious but he was undeterred. The food was disappointing viz two steaks ordered - one rare, one well done, both cooked the same. The steaks appeared to have an unpleasant after taste. Steak and kidney pie had a cardboard crust. We ate it because we were hungry. Although the presentation of the food was attractive there was very little taste and no seasoning. Our bill for soft drinks, three starters, three mains, two desserts came to £97. Value for money it certainly was not. We will not be going again.

Food, ambience, service and wine list – all score 5/5 - overall great location and great meal. We had the place recommended as we wanted to go somewhere for a special meal, and could not fault any aspect of it. We would highly recommend and would return.

The interiors are attractive, the food delicious and extremely good. The wine list is of a much higher standard than usual, and has a number of interesting half bottles. The service is excellent and the young sommelier knowledgeable.

This is simply the best restaurant in the North East.
My wife and I eat here on special occasions, treats, birthdays etc; and we simply can not believe the consistence of the food, the detail to service. The place bistro downstairs is so relaxed and comfortable, but offers such a fine dining experience.
The staff are friendly and attentive, but not intrusive and set you up for the exquisite food. The price is above average, but the food quality more than compensates for this.
Simply a must try.

My wife and I paid our first visit to this restaurant last weekend and after leaving we couldn’t believe we hadn't been before. The food was excellent, the service top class, all at a very reasonable price. The decor is quirky but homely and the atmosphere is soooo relaxed, even more relaxed after couple of bottles of fine wine. We WILL be back.
