My husband and I ate at The New Angel and thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was out of the world and the best I have ever tasted. The staff were very friendly and the service, excellent. We both cannot wait to return when we visit Dartmouth again in June 08. Well done to John Burton Race.

Fantastic. Four of us attended The New Angel on a holiday and it was simply fabulous. Every dish was carefully put together and all of the ingredients seemed so fresh. I have recommended it to all of my friends who intend to go too. Lovely atmosphere and what made the experience even more special was the open kitchen. 10/10!!!

Review by Paul Haynes (13 June 2005)

My partner treated me to dinner at the New Angel for my birthday... and what a treat it was. Food was superbly cooked and presented, I had fish soup to start and rib of beef followed a fantastic crème brûlée polished off with my favourite wine 'Cloudy Bay'. Atmosphere was good apart from when the kitchen closed and most diners left, but that is understandable as our table was not until 9.30. John did his rounds after he had finished in the kitchen and Mrs Race was also chatting with diners. All in all a very pleasant evening. £70 a head is not the cheapest, but it was my birthday treat!

The Carved Angel has now closed, but has been replaced by The New Angel, at the same location, run by John Burton Race. The food is still primarily sourced from the sea. We ate lunch there in August (best to book). Good pleasant and appropriately attentive service; excellent menu without a strict starter/main course layout (i.e. choose what you fancy). They were happy to provide a simplified half portion for my 7 year old. (Some may consider allowing children an annoyance.) I didn't mind the dog beneath the next table, but it's a shame that smoking is allowed. Fortunately we'd almost finished when someone chose to damage all the wonderful flavours with cigarette smoke. Fairly expensive, but worth it.
