Have been an occasional visitor over many years and this trip was as good as ever. Plenty of variety in the menu and a good wine list in a very comfortable atmosphere get you off to a good start. Very good cooking and excellent presentation lived up to expectations for all six of our party, right through four courses and we came away feeling we had enjoyed both high quality and good value. Service from the kitchen was occasionally a little slow, but not worrying, and the odd waft of cigarette smoke from somewhere (not the restaurant) was the only downside. Well worth the excursion.

We moved to Stoke Canon three years ago and discovered this gem almost literally on our doorsteps. If ever we need a treat, The Barton Cross is at the top of our list. The food was excellent, with varied and interesting vegetarian options. The service was friendly, but not overly so and a lovely old world atmosphere made for a terrific night out. It far outclasses any of the generic chain store restaurants in Exeter, where we lived for ten years, but is only a five minute drive out of the city. Of course we have the bonus of being able to walk home.

As locals we were astounded by how good this restaurant was and what value for money it offers, compared to the more well known establishments in the city. This was the best food we have ever enjoyed when dining out. The ambiance was wonderfully warm and Olde Worlde, and the owner makes you feel most welcome. This was a superb evening and celebration of our 36th wedding anniversary.

My fiancé took me to Barton Cross for a meal to celebrate my birthday and what can I say? The food was amazing, the service, friendly and unhurried, and the surroundings, intimate and tranquil. We were so impressed that Barton Cross Hotel is on top of the list for our choice of wedding reception venues.

After reading a few glowing reviews for the restaurant on the quality of food and friendliness, I took my parents there one evening, when they came to visit me. Although a little apprehensive as I had never been there, we instantly warmed to the place and its lovely, friendly and attentive service. First of all, some delicious, beautifully presented canapés accompanied our drinks while we were looking at the menu. The meal itself was exquisite, both my parents and I agreed it was one of the best meals we can remember. The food was so delicately tasty, the portions are just right so that you are not bloated but certainly don’t go hungry. There is an amazing choice and the wine is served well, at the right temperature etc. the service was excellent, courteous and unrushed so it felt like a real treat, although it was perhaps slightly more than we would usually pay, unless for a very special meal. We agreed that it was absolutely amazing value, particularly for the quality of the food-we spent approximately £35 per head for canapés, starter, soup/sorbet and mains, coffee with petit fours and a bottle of wine. I am glad I discovered this place as I would have no hesitation in going back or recommending it as a special dinner out. I’d give it a score of ten on ten.

If you are looking for quality, locally sourced food then there is simply no better place to indulge yourself than The Barton Cross. A warm and friendly atmosphere will greet you, the hotel/restaurant is beautifully positioned in the Exe Valley. I have dined here on many occasions, professionally and socially with my wife for Valentines, birthdays, etc. 10/10 every time....honestly! If anyone asks if I know a good restaurant, this is always my first suggestion...fact!

We have spent many an evening at this wonderful restaurant. To be greeted by a roaring fire in winter and a large glass of red wine is the start of a perfect meal where the choice is varied and the food is delicious. The owner is a very friendly man and you end up feeling very relaxed and comfortable in this small but quaint rural restaurant setting. Would definitely recommend.
