We had a fantastic weekend staying in Shelley's Cottage. It’s a perfect combination of complete privacy in your own cottage, with the convenience of breakfast in the restaurant. Dinner was excellent, and the staff, very pleasant. We'd like to be back.

This hotel is lovely. The restaurant was fully booked when we were staying in August 2006 and the food was fantastic. Couldn't fault the service either. Would recommend the dinner, bed and breakfast packages as the food they serve is excellent and you do save a little over the published menu prices booking it this way.

My husband and I stayed here in February 2003. We were impressed with all aspects of the hotel. The service was friendly and efficient; the food in the restaurant at dinner was imaginative and well presented. Breakfast was more than sufficient to set us up for a day walking in the surrounding hills, the eggs Benedict being particularly scrummy. The bar is busy even in February and is a warm and cosy place to enjoy a drink.

My husband and I took some friends to The Rising Sun for a week's stay (DBB) in July 2003. Since we had our honeymoon here in 1991 we have returned regularly and always found the same magical quality of accommodation, dining and personal, attentive service.
The hotel passed into new ownership prior to our visit in July 2003. We expected some changes - we weren't disappointed, but for all the wrong reasons!
The accommodation was of the same high quality. Our experience in the dining room, however, was not comparable. For the first few nights everything was fine, we were all happy with the menu offered despite one of our party only being able to eat chicken or red meat, thus limiting her slightly in her choices.
The difficulty arose when, after several nights, we observed no variation in the menu whatsoever (unless one counts 'special' fish dishes, offered whenever a local fisherman offered his catch to the chef). This surprised myself and my husband greatly since it contrasted sharply with previous visits (nine in total) where the menu demonstrated nightly changes, and thus a greater variety, particularly when one is staying for 7 nights on a dinner, bed & breakfast basis. This meant, effectively, having to eat the same few dishes repeatedly; not something I expected of The Rising Sun.
When we queried the fixed nature of the menu, it became a source of conflict and provoked aggressive behaviour from some of the hotel staff - we were told that the menu only changed four times a year, and that no allowances could be made, despite the fact that the upmarket bar food being offered was different to that on the restaurant menu. We did ask if we could have bar food instead, but this was, for reasons best known to the hotel, declined. Throughout this unsavoury discussion we were treated with condescension and a complete lack of courtesy by the head waiter. We did ask to discuss the issue with Chef, but Chef refused to speak with us, later saying he was t
