We recently stayed at the Sandpiper and had booked a meal with some trepidation having read a review which called it pretentious. So glad that we did - the meal was excellent, quite special enough to warrant the price, £75 for two; we had three courses, wine, and liquor coffees. The atmosphere and staff were lovely, attentive and so helpful. I forgot to order my side salad until the main course arrived, I mentioned it and a perfect side salad arrived in seconds. I have already recommended it to very discerning friends and will definitely be going back.

I just spent a very pleasant weekend at the Sandpiper. The food may be a little pricey, but the quality was excellent. The crispy duck leg was ‘melt in the mouth’ tender and very tasty indeed. The staff were friendly as usual and the ambience in the restaurant takes some beating! I can't wait to go again.

Well, I had my meal at the Sandpiper last night, we were the only two people eating so we had a table in the bar area. It was cosy and warm near the fire. The lady who served us with the drinks and meals was very polite and helpful. As I am a vegetarian and didn’t like what was on the menu board, they made up a meal out of the foods I liked. The starters soon came and the goats’ cheese was lovely, my veggie main meal was very good too, followed by sweets. We enjoyed the food very much. It was £59.10 for both of us and was a birthday treat, as it was a bit more than I would normally want to pay for a meal. The only down side was there were no bread plates and butter knife.

I ate at the Sandpiper for my 40th on February last year and was very disappointed with the attitude of some of the staff. They spoilt my meal, even when the food was food, it was a bit pricey for a meal but had saved for this special day. I am hoping to eat there again tomorrow after saying I wouldn’t go back. I will give it one more go and see if things have got better.

Review by Mortimer (16 May 2007)

My friends and I dined at the Sandpiper last week: it was a special occasion. I was immediately struck how there were hardly any diners compared to previous occasions. The food was exquisite as usual but the service was not. The wine was not poured for testing, just left on the table, we had to ask for bread plates and extra cutlery, the dessert menu asked for had to be asked for again after a hiatus of twenty minutes. The staff gave the appearance of hiding in the kitchen. All in all it made for a sense of unease and embarrassment as we were repeatedly not attended to and had to attract attention. It was as if the waiting staff were simply not interested. I am loath to avoid The Sandpiper in the future but would like to read more positive comments about standards of service, post-dating this experience.

My wife and I have been visiting the Sandpiper for 4 years, now travelling 45 minutes to eat there. The food is hot, of good quality and well presented. The goat’s cheese starter is a favourite as is the summer pudding when in season.
