A typical small country inn serving heart-warming local food and drink, the Gateside Inn, near Falkland in Fife, is as close as it gets to good home cooking away from home. Accessible on the A91, it is close to the Lomond Hills, a popular halt for walkers and cyclists.

This is where you can have your fill of Scottish food such as haggis, neeps and tatties with whisky cream sauce, Wellfield pheasant filled with haggis, spring onions and potatoes, baked local trout with lemon butter sauce, select Scottish steaks, chocolate and drambuie mousse with shortbread biscuits, Scottish cheese and Gaelic coffee. For variety there's also king prawns tossed in garlic butter, bacon leek and cheese tart, roast rump of lamb in garlic gravy and penne pasta with chorizo sausage, courgette and tomato.

For Sunday lunch enjoy roast rib-eye of Scottish beef with seasonal vegetables, potatoes, gravy and Yorkshire pudding. A full bar has its own menu and serves 32 malt whiskies including Highland Park, Macallan, Glenlivet and Glenfarclas, and a selection of beers, ciders and wines.
