Restaurant at The Clachaig Inn

Clachaig, nr Ballachulish, PH49 4HX [Map]

Glencoe is well known for the infamous massacre of 1692 when the Campbells committed arguably the first known blue on blue by slaughtering the MacDonalds, largely due to a communication failure. Nowadays it is more widely regarded for its spectacular but sometimes brooding setting, in the middle of which sits the Clachaig Inn, awarded Le Routiers's accolade of Real Ale Pub of the Year in 2004.

If you want a quick and informal snack go for a bowl of chilli beef, topped with cheddar cheese and served with nachos and salad. More formal is the dining room, with a starter, say, of haggis and creamy white onion with a Drambuie sauce, closely pursued by a Clachaig venison casserole in the form of tender cuts of Lochaber venison, with blackberries, juniper berries all finished with a dash of Scotch whiskey.

Assuming that you choose to pass up on the Athol Brose there is always the Ecclefechan tart, a mix of dried fruits and nuts on a pastry base, served hot with cream or custard depending on your whim.

Whilst there is a wine list that should not be lightly dismissed The Clachaig Inn is more famously known for the excellence and diversity of its real ales, with a Beer Festival as part of the ongoings and a number of awards over the years.

The beautiful setting at the foot of Glencoe has certainly been in The Ballachulish Hotel's favour, but nature has bestowed her ample splendour even in the area surrounding the hotel. The result is a stunning place where guests can settle in for a blissfully quiet weekend. Step in to the Bùlas Bar and Bistro for a cappuccino by the fireside or a relaxed sunset dinner..

The menu does full justice to modern Scottish and British cooking with black pudding and apple fritters accompanied by crispy salad and a balsamic dressing heading the list. Main courses are designed for robust appetites - grilled loin of pork and loin of venison served with a blackcurrant liqueur sauce and potato croquettes - and finish with a vanilla and cinnamon pear served with its own chocolate sauce and honeycomb ice cream.

With live entertainment at Bulas on selected nights, The Ballachulish is one the best places to combine comfort with contemporary warmth and castle bagging.

Few places can add up to the splendour of the Isle of Glencoe Hotel at Ballachulish, where guests can not only enjoy the luxurious comfort that is apparent in the bedrooms, but also indulge themselves in some modern British and Scottish cuisine at the Loch Side Restaurant. As the name says, this elegant eatery offers some remarkable views of the loch and it seems to be one of the many aspects that keep drawing people towards the hotel. Whatever the occasion or time of the day, this restaurant seems to be a preferred dining destination amongst many.

Enjoy delicious dishes such as a rustic pork and chicken liver pate served with salad leaves and oatcakes amongst the starters and then progress towards the seared breast of duckling on a bed of stir fried noodles and sweet chilli sauce. Choose the blueberry cheesecake topped with a fruit coulis for dessert and and enjoy the wealth of choices for wine and spirits at the Loch Side Restaurant.
