Long gone are the days when the eating part of travelling in the remoter parts of Scotland often meant that you took your gastronomic life in your hands. The Old Library is part of a movement that has transformed hazard into pleasure. Local Hero was filmed in the area, and whilst that tends to bring the people, many of them on the road to the Isles. The Old Library thrives more on the quality of the food and comfort that it provides.

A menu, that is proudly Scottish, features locally sourced fish and venison as well as Skye lamb and beef. Dishes might include pan fried scallops with lime and dill or steamed mussels in blue cheese and white wine, with mains such as monkfish fillet with tarragon and pernod or sirloin of beef with haggis and whisky cream; whilst you should save space for the likes of malt whisky ice cream, cloutie dumpling or sticky toffee pudding.

This is the sort of place that could be built into a holiday as one of the highlights, though the locals do it all the time. There is good accommodation at Old Library, even if the books are long gone. Don't worry about it, your mind will be on other things than reading.

The Old Forge, Knoydart, is mainland Britain's Remotest Pub as certified by The Guinness Book of Records. Accessible only by boat! It is also one of the West Coast of Scotland's best-kept "foodie's" secrets, their candlelit bar on the seashore looks out over Loch Nevis to the Outer Isles. Unique to Knoydart, their tables overlook South to the sea. If you've come by boat, you can use one of their pub moorings. The local ferry, MV Western Isles, more affectionately known as "Brucie", runs twice daily Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and every week day from Easter to September.

You can watch their daily catch land on the pier! Fresh Loch Nevis langoustines, Prawn Platters, Rhum lobsters, squats, fresh mussels, crabs, john dory, monkfish, hake, Mallaig haddock and skate are only a sample of the fruits de mer caught by the fishermen on their doorstep. Wild Knoydart venison, Knoydart hill lamb, organic malt breads, delicious puddings, soups and ice creams are prepared using only Scotland's freshest produce, and herbs and summer fruits grown locally. A speciality is The Old Forge "prawn platter", a feast of fresh Loch Nevis langoustine. The home made aioli dipping sauce is not for the faint hearted!
