Few places can add up to the splendour of the Isle of Glencoe Hotel at Ballachulish, where guests can not only enjoy the luxurious comfort that is apparent in the bedrooms, but also indulge themselves in some modern British and Scottish cuisine at the Loch Side Restaurant. As the name says, this elegant eatery offers some remarkable views of the loch and it seems to be one of the many aspects that keep drawing people towards the hotel. Whatever the occasion or time of the day, this restaurant seems to be a preferred dining destination amongst many.

Enjoy delicious dishes such as a rustic pork and chicken liver pate served with salad leaves and oatcakes amongst the starters and then progress towards the seared breast of duckling on a bed of stir fried noodles and sweet chilli sauce. Choose the blueberry cheesecake topped with a fruit coulis for dessert and and enjoy the wealth of choices for wine and spirits at the Loch Side Restaurant.

Choices could include devilled whitebait, oysters or seafood soup to start, followed by West Coast queen scallops, fresh lobster - whole or half - sea bream, oven baked with a spring onion and chilli dressing, traditional fish n' chips or a platter of mixed seafood.

Café 1 has received wide acclaim for its contribution to the cause of good Scottish food in Inverness. The décor is stunning with an overall impression of richness and warm comfort. No wonder people keep on coming back. But that is only the beginning. A starter could be drawn from penne, salmon, basil and white wine cream sauce or a bruschetta of mushrooms, red onion and peppercorn.

It offers a typically Modern European approach to food, and excursions to all parts of the globe are not spurned, witness the Thai red vegetable curry with coconut milk and basmati rice. An Angus rump steak could come in handy after a strenuous day at the stalking and for those who like to keep their food uncomplicated the chilli and garlic pork sausages at Café 1 have a good pedigree, with mash and onion gravy.

Their bistro menu lunch at £6.50 for two courses must represent some of the best value north of the border. The wine list marries up well with the décor and prices are not far behind, but some rewarding bins await those with patience. Café 1 is a valuable addition to the gourmet life of Inverness.
