A Room in the Town

This excellent restaurant is located in the heart of Edinburgh's architectural showpiece, the New Town. With 50 covers it is not big, but very cosy, and they operate a BYOW policy, even though they are licensed, in the light of which they take a very modest corkage fee.

  • Cuisine(s): Bistro, Scottish, Seafood
  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: £15.00, Dinner: £26.00

A Room in the West End and Teuchters Bar

This is the 'little sister' to A Room in the Town, and there are some similarities, though not the fact that here they are located under Teuchters Bar in William Street, part of Edinburgh's West End.

  • Cuisine(s): Bar

Ann Purna

Anna Purna, which means The Food Provider, is a part of Edinburgh which must somehow always be maintained. As a Gujerati Indian it gives vegetarianism a good name and hardened carnivores are said to have eaten here without ever being conscious of the lack of meat.

  • Address: 44-45 St Patrick's Square, Edinburgh, EH8 9ET (Map)
  • Cuisine(s): Indian, Vegetarian
  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: N/A, Dinner: £19.00

Apartment, The

Located just up the road from the King's Theatre, The Apartment has sustained its early promise and remains one of the trendy spots to eat on the edge of the New Town. The fittings reminded me of an Oxbridge College's modern dining room - nothing skimped, modern and sensible, good taste and eminently practical.

  • Address: 7-13 Barclay Place, Edinburgh, EH10 4HN (Map)
  • Cuisine(s): Modern
  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: N/A, Dinner: £24.00

Atholl, The

The Howard is a traditional Scottish Georgian town house hotel, in the heart of Edinburgh's classical New Town. It was acquired by The Town House Company in 1995, marking a further stage in the progress of this outstandingly elegant hotel, the preferred haven of discerning visitors who stay regularly in the town.

  • Address: The Howard Hotel, 34 Great King Street , Edinburgh , EH3 6QH (Map)
  • Cuisine(s): Scottish
  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: £32.00, Dinner: £45.00

Atrium

A well-located restaurant handy for Edinburgh's theatreland and the financial sector of the city. Carefully designed to look like a casual appurtenance of the theatre it has a sophistication which flatters.
