Cul de Sac
44 Ashton Lane, Hilhead, Glasgow, G12 8SJ [Map]
Cul de Sac is a great favourite with students, who often drop in for a nightcap and chat after an evening at the cinema or possibly even studying.
If you are looking for a quite romantic supper and you are under 25 this is probably not for you. The restaurant is separate from the DJ and more cacophonous areas, but not overmuch.

The Cottier Restaurant
93 Hyndland Street, Glasgow, G11 5JE [Map]
This restaurant is an integral part of the Cottier complex located in the former Downhill Parish Church, Glasgow. An imaginative project that has attracted major arts and heritage funding it has made a major impression on the city, not least its elegant restaurant.
This has a South American flavour, with starters of smoked salmon and apple quesadilla with horseradish cream, or baked corn chips with cheddar cheese, blackbean salsa, guacamole and sour cream. Attractive small, or side, dishes make very good starters. Fajita come with a choice of imaginative flavours, and embraces chicken, beef, seafood, vegetable, prawn and chicken, and mixed.
The Chef's Special is a homemade beefburger topped with mature cheddar, sundried tomato, chilli chutney and guacamole, served with salad and handcut chips, and don't make the mistake of thinking you can get away with one before you move on to the mains, unless you have a very special capacity.
Mains include Colombian grilled chicken with seafood cakes, with avocado and lime sauce, and crispy fried whole snapper served with a ginger and plum chutney, ribbon vegetables and coconut rice.
Desserts seem to defeat the South American concept, and Dunsyre blue cheese with pear in red wine and oatcakes is a complete - and very welcome - capitulation.
This is a very smooth and pleasant operation, provided you like South American food of course, and once the theatre part of the complex is in full swing should come into its own.

Mr Singh's India
149 Elderslie Street, Glasgow, G3 7JR [Map]
A popular Glasgow venue with Indian in mind when reliability and diversity are high on the agenda. Mr Singh's is also miles apart from the more traditional style of Indian décor to which we have grown accustomed over the past few decades, sometimes to the point of mild boredom. If you have never seen an Indian waiter wearing the kilt before, this is the place for you and, as survivors from an association with the Indian Army will recall, they wear it well.
Even the wide ranging menu has a touch of Scotland with haggis pakoras available, but in a country where deep fried Mars Bars are de rigeur the haggis could almost be flattered by such treatment. Otherwise it's the usual attractive spread of Indian dishes with some interesting additions of which lamb Mazadar is but one. This by the way is a fiery dish made more so by the addition of a shot of Remy Martin - now that is sacrilegious. This is a fun place to eat, good and handy with a lively atmosphere that helps make a great evening.
