Ashoka Ashton Lane

I doubt whether anybody knows how many Ashokas there are in Glasgow, not does it particularly matter, but I do have an affection for this one which featured quite regularly in my life for a time. Suffice to say that it continues to provide sustenance to formidable numbers of Glaswegians and others in a way that leaves you feeling rather as though they were expecting you, are even pleased that you came and took a genuine interest in what you thought you wanted to eat.

ASK - Glasgow

For some time I made the mistake of thinking that no group of restaurants in the region of 200 locations could hope to maintain the quality for which I was looking. Then one day I decided to put my prejudices to the test, walked into Oxford Ask! and discovered that I could not have been more mistaken.

Aurora at Langs Hotel

Langs Hotel has been described as 'designed within an inch of its life' and it is not an overstatement. However, it does not greatly affect its appeal and the restaurant is positioned on a mezzanine floor that strategically overlooks the buzzy bar area beneath.

Aziza's Cafe Bazaar

If you were a former patron of the Mezzanote Italian trattoria, but a haggis hop from the Kelvin Bridge you will know exactly where Aziza's is; now, where the pizzas and pastas used to delight, there is a menu that embraces the cuisines of Morocco and the Middle East including mezze, couscous, tagines, tabouleh and kebabs, with such regular dishes as Lebanese rice and saffron, pine nuts and vegetables.

Bistro at the Hotel du Vin

Recently voted Best Restaurant of the Year by The List, The Bistro follows in some fairly illustrious footsteps, but by all accounts seems to have got the formula right this time. One of Scotland's finest luxury boutique hotels, it has as its centre the Bistro, which has been enhanced by a new bar and bistro which sets new standards of excellence.

  • Address: 1 Devonshire Gardens, Glasgow, G12 0UX (Map)

Bistro Julienne

The rise and rise of the Merchant Square district in Glasgow is only one example of the regeneration of this fine city that has spanned the last 20 years. In a state of constant rivalry with Edinburgh, Glasgow has always known how to enjoy itself, even if this is sometimes seen to be too well, and it has never lost its talent for cheerful, cheeky pleasure.
