Located on the scenic single track road between Lochgilphead and Tarbet with sweeping views across Loch Coalisport to Gigha and the Paps of Jura, the Kilberry is a traditional inn with handsome stone walls, beams, log fires and great atmosphere.

Bought in Spring 20005 by Clare Johnson and David Wilson, the place has quickly acquired an enviable reputation for superb food, the warmth of its welcome and a breathtaking location. It is one of a mere half dozen or so restaurants in Scotland - and the only one with a lady chef - to have been awarded a Bib Gourmand by the Michelin Guide.

Lunch and dinner are taken in the parlour. Local Highland beef and lamb, very local mackerel, lobster, crab, scallops and langoustines all regularly feature on the menu. The aim is to treat food simply and with care and to offer really tasty, uncomplicated dishes in relaxed, comfortable surroundings. Starters set the note with minted broad bean soup with crumbled feta, or Sleepy Hollow smoked salmon served with caperberries. Main courses could be sturdy, such as Ormsary rib-eye or sirloin steak with roasted vine tomatoes and bloody mary butter, or Hector's line caught striped mullet grilled with pepperonata and a piquillo pepper dressing.

A Kilberry summer coupe with fresh berries, strawberry sauce, ice cream and shortbread is amongst the delights you are likely to encounter there, and a cheese selection of Isle of Mull Cheddar, Appleby's Cheshire and Cashel Blue, served with biscuits, grapes and Major Marshall's chutney is enough to convince anyone that they are alongside the gourmet gods.

Later, in the low-beamed lounge, you would be less than human not to be seduced by the charms of some of the finest malt whiskies in Scotland. And if, after sampling those, you decide to stay for breakfast as well, there is a choice from four comfortable bedrooms in which to spend the night.
