Malin Court is a strange example of the genre. Look out of the reception area over one of the finest golf courses that Scotland has to offer, look the other way and note the retired and elderly sunning themselves in the sheltered central courtyard.

The cuisine reflects much of what is finest in Scots cooking and chef Andrea Beach and her team are not short on ideas to adapt and improve, without removing the essential quality.

A well-tuned wine list with house wine at £11.95 only helps to improve the experience. No wonder those retired folk look so well!

Built in a time of Edwardian splendour Turnberry has come down over the years in remarkably good shape. A heart-stopping view over the lower Clyde and two international golf courses has helped, but its reputation has not been achieved, and held, by golf and space alone.

There are a number of locations where one may eat, but the best is undoubtedly the pillared dining room with its top-class service and everything else to match. Legendary figures either side of the kitchen door have come and gone over the years but standards have never slipped.

Leader-in-his-field Chef Cameron is about to leave, but Turnberry will survive even that. A superb cellar has been lovingly maintained by the likes of Ian Cumming and others. If you wish to see how it should be done Turnberry is as good as anywhere.

Stagioni is a spa restaurant at the elegant Westin Turnberry Resort and offers fresh and simply cooked Italian cuisine. The Scottish resort boasts a spectacular coastal setting with breathtaking views of Isle of Arran, Ailsa Craig and the Irish Sea.
