Barley Bree
6 Willoughby Street, Muthill, Crieff, PH5 2AB [Map]
Deep in the heart of Perthshire, a former old coaching inn, dating back to the 18th century, is now home to a family run hotel, Barley Bree. In the restaurant a brick fireplace occupies the centre and the stone walls, unclothed wooden tables along with soft white drapes accentuate the sunny Scottish mood creating a fresh yet rustic ambiance.
An intelligently designed carte du jour, emphasising on a straightforward and direct approach to cooking, encompasses classic dishes from French cuisine and includes the likes of seared scallops, chicken liver parfait and mackerel fillet as appetizers. Among mains slow braised pork belly and chicken leg confit are good options whilst you can expect dark chocolate soufflé and vanilla panna cotta for dessert.
A modest selection of wines that finely complement the food is to hand as well.

Restaurant at Knock Castle Hotel & Spa
Drummond Terrace, Crieff, PH7 4AN [Map]
Nestling in the hills of the Strathearn Valley, the enchanting Knock Castle Hotel and Spa is a haven for those who wish to get away from the bustle of modern living. With uninterrupted views across the beautiful Perthshire countryside, this stunning Victorian mansion was once the baronial home of Scotland's shipping magnate Lady McBrayne.
The Henderson Group took over in December 2007 and the recent multi-million pound refurbishment ensures that all rooms are fully up to date. If you really want to cut a dash you could arrive in style by chartering your own private helicopter from the Henderson's fleet.
In contrast to the period façade, the hotel is relatively contemporary in style with a bright reception area set in warm wood tones. The bedrooms are named after several way marked walks around Crieff. So choose, say, between the Lady Mary, Ben Chonzie or Glenalmond, each with its characteristic design and remarkable views from the window. With eight luxurious bedrooms, the adjacent Castle Lodge is suitable for large groups who seek comfort and privacy.
After a stroll through three-and-a-half acres of wooded grounds, pamper yourself with the latest spa treatments and therapies or settle in the rooftop lounge to take in some astounding views of the picturesque landscape beyond, whilst sipping an apéritif. Indulge your taste buds in some delectable fare from the seasonally changing menu where dishes are created using organic fruit and vegetables, and meat, fish and game sourced from suppliers across Scotland.
The dining area is a charming space with dark pink walls and matching tablecloth while the large mirror, art work and ornate windows accentuate the period feel. An excellent selection of wines is always there to do credit to the food.
Those who love outdoor pursuits could avail themselves of the concierge service to arrange access to tee off at a golf course, or to the nearby Loch Earn, which is a preferred destination for water sport enthusiasts.
