In 1644, on the eve of the Battle of Newbury, Oliver Cromwell is said to have dined at The Royal Oak. Whatever else he may or may not have been, Cromwell seems to have had a taste for a well-kept table, and that tradition is certainly well maintained at today's Royal Oak.
