Trunkwell specialises in holding functions, and very well it does them, from smaller corporate events through to full blown weddings; these are held outside in the Langans Marquee - linked to the famous Langans Brasserie in London's Mayfair - holding substantial numbers, up to two hundred guests, at a time. Trunkwell was originally built in 1878 for a successful local business family. In 1937 it was bought for 5000 guineas by the Udall family who lived in the house until 1966. It was then run as a restaurant by various people until 1990 when the current owner, Bob Walton, bought the house. Much time and money has since been spent restoring the Victorian house and gardens to their former glory.

The inside dining room is used mainly for private dining, and they are happy to book that out for parties of between ten and firty four for a seated meal. Their inventive British cuisine is the sort of food that you can feel comfortable with, a typical meal could consist of: Mediterranean fish soup; eggs benedict; king prawns in garlic butter; bang bang chicken - smoked breast of chicken coated in peanut sauce or terrine of foie gras, foie gras layered and infused with armagnac and served with jellied sauternes to start.

This could be followed by: grilled tuna steak with watermelon and mango salsa; cannon of lamb with dauphinoise potatoes and redcurrant jus or loin of venison with chestnuts figs and juniper scented jus. But leave room for their classic puddings - choose from flambéed crepes Suzette, crème brûlée with raspberries, blackberry and apple crumble, steamed syrup sponge and custard to a duo of Belgian chocolate mousse. Their extensive a la carte menu and well stocked wine list can cater for every occasion.

Trunkwell also specialises in off-site business meetings, multi-activity days, team building, seminars, training sessions and full conferences. All catering requirements are provided from breakfast meetings, lunches, afternoon tea and dinner.

There are few things more comforting than sitting on a deck on a bright sunny day with views across the pond and acres of green foliage and a glass of Prosecco to hand. Experience this and much more at this 16th century country house styled Dew Pond Restaurant. The soft, mellow interior accentuated with artwork and delicate lighting set the right note for a quiet unhurried meal.

The cooking looks to France for inspiration and is well complemented by a sensibly priced wine list. Tower of Cornish crab with avocado, gazpacho juices and herb salad, and warm oak smoked salmon with cucumber, dill and crème fraîche could be followed by slow roasted belly of pork or honey roasted Gressingham duck breast. If game is in your mind then a peppered saddle of local roe deer may impress and to finish there's a miniature assortment of vanilla crème brûlée, warm chocolate tart, sticky toffee pudding and caramel parfait.

Splendidly rustic and unpretentiously beautiful in its rural façade, the Pot Kiln is a country pub that serves delicious and simple fare, particularly wild game, although the other dishes there are equally challenging. Mike Robinson, Chef, owner and fish and game provider of this homely restaurant is a well known face on TV and has also found time to write a few books. The ingredients they use are sourced locally from small producers, while the wild game and fish are generally caught by Mike himself from amongst Bershire's extensively rolling acres.

Focussing largely on simple presentation but flavour-full preparation techniques, the kitchen comes up with wildly popular starters such as a warm salad of wood pigeon, crispy bacon and black pudding. The main course lets you indulge in slow braised wild rabbit with rosemary and garlic while puddings feature classic seasonal crumble with custard or a selection of cheeses with homemade bread. Carefully chosen wines comprise the list along with the usual beers and ales.

Tamil Nadu is popular for its hospitality and a deep belief that serving food to others is a service to humanity, Madras is the capital city of that state and was established in the seventeenth century by the British. Madras Currys is a recent and innovative addition to the Indian eating out scene in Reading offering guests the unusual aromas and flavours of the Tamil cuisine.

Podi uthappam - pancake topped with spicy special powder - and idiyappam, steamed rice noodles served with vegetable kurma or sambar, are a couple of interesting ideas for a different breakfast. For a lighter bite you could try masala vadai, spicy lentil patties flavoured with green chilli, curry leaves and ginger, or fresh squid deep fried with different spices. Specialities include dishes such as began bhartha - grilled aubergine made with coconut gravy - special boneless chicken in pepper sauce or fish in South Indian village style with a touch of tamarind and lemon rice.
