82-83 High Street, Eton, SL4 6AF [Map]
Close to the river on the Eton side of Windsor Bridge, Gilbey's Bar & Restaurant is located between the historic buildings of Eton College and Windsor Castle. The light and airy restaurant and conservatory lead on to a picturesque courtyard garden - a haven of tranquillity for summer dining, yet only a stone's throw from the bustle and excitement of nearby Windsor. This site has now been run continuously by the Gilbey family since 1975. The extensive refurbishment in 2010 saw the addition of a superb Studio Guest Accommodation Suite with rooftop views to Windsor Castle.
They are now spreading their buying net for their wine list much wider by enlisting the help of Tom Gilbey (Bill and Caroline's son), who after fourteen years in the wine trade, has started his own very dynamic wine company - The Vintner. The list changes frequently with exciting new additions from around the world as well as the French classics.
The Modern British 'a la carte' menu, with its emphasis on seasonal ingredients, has been designed by Head Chef Amaury de Oliveira and his talented team. There's a choice of at least seven starters prime among which would be the seared scallops, crab and lemon tian with carpaccio of smoked tuna and fennel chiffonade, or chicken liver parfait with curried chicory chutney, toasted walnut and raisin bread.
The affair with fresh and seasonal ingredients continues with the main courses, resulting in such delicious fare as roast Barbary duck breast with butternut and potato gratin, cavolo nero and candied orange; 7oz sirloin steak with green peppercorn sauce, chips and rocket, and tomato fondue tarte tatin with crème fraîche and basil mousse and melted gorgonzola.
The dessert list is very appealing, featuring such delectable confections as a lemon tart with vanilla ice cream, or dark chocolate truffle marquise with spiced mango compote and coconut sorbet. If you find more savoury delights tempting, there is a selection of British cheeses served with celery, chutney and biscuits.
In addition to this, there is an excellent value Set Menu available from Monday-Saturday lunchtime and Sunday-Thursday evening from 6.00pm. On Friday and Saturday evenings it is available between 6.00 - 7.00pm. This menu is ideal for a quick bite before a visit to Windsor Theatre, concerts at Eton College or St George's Chapel Windsor Castle and the races at Windsor Racecourse.
Afternoon tea is available in the weekends between 3.30pm - 5.30pm on Saturday, and on Sundays at 4pm - 6pm. For those who prefer something savoury there is also their afternoon 'grazing' menu.
Do click on their Website, which always features the up to date menus and pictures of the restaurant and private dining room.
This is also a wonderful venue for private parties both large and small. The upstairs private dining room, which seats a maximum of sixteen, is perfect for both private and corporate entertaining as well as intimate reception parties. The friendly and helpful staff have a great reputation for their caring and organisational skills.

Barry Avenue, The Promenade, Windsor, SL4 1QX [Map]
Windsor is one of England's most beautiful towns, steeped in history and located in a wonderful natural setting on the banks of the Thames. There is so much to do locally with great shops, wonderful museums, Windsor and Ascot racecourses, The Great Park and of course Windsor Castle, home to the Royal Family.
The only thing lacking was a flagship restaurant and bar that the residents could be proud of and in which visitors could indulge themselves. That was until Browns opened in May 2002.
Browns Windsor became a favoured location in less than two years. In the winter months the restaurant oozes warmth and charm as shoppers, tourists, business folk and Windsor's discerning residents utilise Browns as the ideal place to relax and meet friends and colleagues.
However, in the summer the restaurant really comes alive. Browns Windsor is the place to people watch and be seen, whether you are there to enjoy a meal on the balcony, or a long cocktail on the riverside decking.
The restaurant is located opposite the river ferry which takes people to the races at Windsor and Ascot, and makes Browns an ideal location for corporate entertaining and race-goers. Browns Windsor combines modern style with the high values of excellent service, quality food and drink that has made it the much loved restaurant it has grown to be.
Browns is a classic English restaurant with a menu that evolves rather than changes and there's always a dish to suit your taste. So typical starters might include pan seared scallops on a bed of pea and mascarpone purée with chorizo and chilli butter sauce or lobster and crab croquettes with a garlic cream leading on to main courses such as slow cooked shoulder of Welsh lamb in Rosemary and garlic jus with minted broad beans and peas, and sweet potato dauphinoise or grilled chicken breast topped with prosciutto and taleggio with basil oil, served with watercress and crisp seasoned fries.
A quick look at the dessert menu brings you to the conclusion that this is no place to skip on sweets, so indulge wholeheartedly in the apple, gooseberry and elderflower crumble with custard, profiteroles with warm chocolate sauce or the lemon and mandarin tart with clotted cream.
Browns offers a genuine value for money experience but also can cater for large parties with a more expansive budget. A full wine, cocktail and champagne list, with the champagnes being particularly famous for their sensible pricing, ensures that every occasion is well-blessed with joie de vivre.

Unit 10, The Riverside Oracle Shopping Centre, Reading, RG1 2AG [Map]
Spurred on by the success of LSQ2 at GreenPark, Reading, Sally and Tony Cole took a considered look at a site in the town centre and were fortunate to secure another riverside location at the Oracle in the very heart of this vibrant university town.
The very epitome of a modern restaurant, the glass walls bathe the interior in natural light that combines with the contemporary cathedral-like height of the space to create a perfect backdrop against which to showcase the theatre of modern exhibition cooking. This is a space in which to impress, to entertain clients, or merely chill out with friends, colleagues, relations even.
On the corner of the riverside and London Street, Oracle is handy for parking at Holybrook and Riverside. Both are safe, secure and easily accessible. Riverside is open 24/7. If travelling by rail Reading station is only a mile away.
Start your meal in style with baked Waterloo cheese, onion marmalade with chilli relish, or there's olives marinated with olive oil, garlic, chilli and fresh herbs, and home baked bread with olive oil, balsamic and spezie.
Traditional Thai fishcakes of salmon and pangasius fillet with sweet chilli sauce, wild local rabbit and Meon Valley pork faggot with braised leeks and spicy butternut broth, or potted duo of fresh and smoked salmon with crème fraiche, pernod, lemon juice and chives are but three from a good range of entrée dishes.
Main courses pursue a happy path of inventiveness tinged with tradition and the red curry of seafood, an aromatic cream curry with scallops, salmon, pollock and prawns, venison Wellington accompanied by haggis, horseradish cream, swede fondant and red wine sauce, or pan fried North Sea cod with star anise braised oxtail and oyster mushrooms reinforce this trend. For an indulgent concession to modern food take a closer look at the Wagyu beef burger on brioche with local cooked salmon, free range fried egg, bacon, cheese, chilli miso and triple cooked chips.
The char-grill continues the theme of modern and imaginative dishes with a difference, and the weeping tiger kangaroo fillet steak is marinated in lime, chilli and coriander and served with jasmine rice. A roasted Cornish monkfish comes to table wrapped in prosciutto with Yorkshire pudding, cider, chorizo and caper cream sauce. The butternut squash and chickpea gnocchi stages an appearance, with a supporting cast of chestnut brown mushrooms and wild garlic.
The range of sweet temptations that lies in wait to trap the weak and unwary scores points with a treacle tart with crème anglaise, icky sticky toffee pudding with toffee pecan sauce and Chantilly cream and a local cheese board that seems to have made a point of selecting the most outstanding of its kind, all stating the case for a menu that has not just had some puddings added on.
LSQ2's express lunch operates daily from 12 to 6 pm, offering exceptional value from a two course menu with such hot dishes as traditional Thai fishcakes with sweet chilli sauce and home made Pollock fish fingers with triple cooked chips and mushy peas.
On Sundays (11-5) LSQ2 serves brunch, the ideal occasion to totally chill with or without friends, probably the newspapers, enjoying anything from coffee and croissants to an impressive full English, and much, much more as lunch comes and goes.
Looking for private dining for an intimate party of up to 8? Call 0118 9511 311 and do it in style at Oracle Riverside.
A smart wine list presses the right buttons. From a 2006 Chianti Reserva Villa Di Campobello to a South African 2007 Merlot with a nose like a port light, the list follows in the footsteps of the LSQ2 interpretation of exciting food in great surroundings and company.
Their excellent Website will keep you up to date on changes and events.

62-63 St Mary's Butts, Reading, RG1 2LG [Map]
glo at Reading has brought an added air of sophistication to eating out in this popular university town. Whatever the purpose of your call at glo, winding down with colleagues after a brusque day or just enjoying the company of friends, you can enjoy some expertly constructed cocktails in a chic and romantic environment to set your evening in motion before dining in the restaurant.
The signature cocktails are the perfect way to go, perhaps starting with one of the six listed martinis, before going on to classic longs, sparklers or shooters. Driving? Then select one of the four non alcoholic varieties.
An international menu offers many interesting choices, and they recommend sharing food for maximum pleasure, although many do not wish to do this. Dim sum is a speciality so look out for pork and prawn siu mai, hoi sin duck, and scallop and shiitake mushroom dumplings amongst the steamed.
That old favourite duck spring roll leads off the crispy dim sum, cashew and prawn dumplings represent the new wave and vegetarian spring rolls are pure melt in the mouth. Starters include mushrooms with gorgonzola and coriander, Thai crab cakes and hoisin duck pancakes.
They also have an interesting selection of noodles, and pesto and coriander, Thai green and kung po are amongst them. Nowadays you seem to be never less than ten metres from a pizza, and glo is on the mark once again giving a new dimension to this much loved Italian invention, all served with a unique house tomato base and lightly sprinkled with Asian spices, the hoi sin duck or Thai spicy pepperoni are highly recommended.
The grills are equally spectacular with Thai BBQ ribs and poussin chicken, manuka rump steak, and pesto lemongrass chicken skewers. Whilst exploring your way through the dessert menu you might encounter a chocolate box, or ice cream money bags, hot and crisp on the outside with creamy Asian ice cream on the inside, topped with warm manuka honey.
The taste in wines is eclectic and not so large as to be thoroughly confusing. Several are by the glass and all under £20. glo stays open until 2am and as a refuge for the restless night hawks it could hardly be bettered.
Their smart Website will tell you more. Only one thing left to say - enjoy! It is even open for breakfast from 10.30 each day as well.

53 Station Road, Kintbury, nr Newbury, RG17 9UT [Map]
The Dundas Arms in Kintbury is very fortunate to have such a magnificent location on the banks of the River Kennet and The Kennet and Avon canal. The natural beauty of the area is inspiring and this friendly establishment has been looking after the needs, offering both food and drink, for famished and parched folk since the end of the 18th century. In the past three decades it has belonged to just one family and owner David Dalzell-Piper has worked and cooked at The Dundas Arms throughout that time.
As it happens to be at the crossroads of Southern England, it is only a short distance by road or rail from many national and local places of interest and entertainment. Oxford of the famed dreaming spires, Winchester, Salisbury and its Cathedral, and Stonehenge are only around 25 miles away and the village is halfway between London and Bath, with its Roman Baths and The Royal Crescent.
If you are so inclined, you could attend the races in the famous Newbury racecourse and spend the day in an exciting way. More sedate pursuits might include a visit to the close by Highclere Castle, home to the Earls of Carnarvon, where tours include the Egyptian centre with numerous artefacts from the tomb of Tutankhamen.
The restaurant is quiet and peaceful, an oasis of sorts, but more like a French Auberge, and has delightful views over the canal, a perfect setting in which to enjoy the local produce, imaginatively cooked. The bar is livelier and offers updated modern food; there is also an extensive wine list from which to choose to complement your meal.
The bar menu is chalked up on a blackboard and changes from day to day; it could feature crispy duck salad, steak and kidney pie with vegetables, or avocado and hot roast salmon salad.
Starters from the à la carte in the restaurant could typically include grilled goat's cheese on Italian bread on sweet tomato purée; potted brown shrimps with toast, or avocado and hot roast salmon salad while there's a delightful choice for vegetarians with the spinach and red pepper lasagne with salad.
Moving on to the main courses, dishes such as the roast breast of English duck with cider, apple sauce and vegetables stand out, while the grilled rib eye steak with mushrooms and chips could be considered a firm favourite. There's also battered cod fillet with chips and mushy peas; fried calves' liver with bacon, mash and onion gravy or steak and kidney pie with vegetables for those looking to tantalise their taste buds with an interesting confluence of textures and tastes.
The Dundas Arms has five bedrooms on the ground floor of the old stable block and all are comfortably furnished with telephones and en-suite bathrooms. Patio doors in each of the rooms open on to a terrace that offers marvellous views of the River Kennet and the trees beyond. More information is available on their Website.

11-13 Broad Street, Wokingham, RG40 1AU [Map]
It is not an easy task to maintain impeccable standards and uniformity of taste across a chain of over eight hundred outlets, yet that is just the distinction that The Gondola Group has achieved. Their restaurants, with the brand names of Zizzi, ASK and Pizza Express, serve authentic Italian food at reasonable prices, in a warm and friendly ambience. The chain continues to grow, with the group opening around twenty-five new outlets each year.
Another talent that the group has is converting listed buildings and in which to house their restaurants. This has helped the group maintain standards, but allows each location to keep its innate charm. Done up in light colours, with wooden floors and gleaming cutlery, Zizzi boasts of a bustling open kitchen which churns out freshly prepared, tasty fare.
Like all good Italian restaurants, the extensive carte offers four distinct sections of antipasti, salads, mains, including pasta, pizza and risottos, a meat and fish menu which changes seasonally and a vast and exciting dessert menu. The restaurant's special antipasti platter has mixed Italian meats with buffalo milk mozzarella, marinated sun-dried tomatoes, mixed olives and red onion focaccia bread. Garlic mozzarella pizza bread and caramelised balsamic onions too, set the tone for a hearty meal.
The calzones or folded pizzas are a treat and come with salads. The carne piccante calzone has marinated chicken, meatballs, Bolognese sauce, mushrooms, chillies, tomato and mozzarella while the clarissa version, has aubergine, and red pepper caponata, olives, goats' cheese, rocket, pine nuts, tomato and mozzarella. The pasta and risotto sections arouse plenty of interest, with the farfalle alla Genovese combined with marinated roasted artichoke hearts, Santos tomatoes, and pine nuts in a delicious creamy pesto sauce or the light risotto with tiger prawns, oak-roasted salmon, calamari, courgettes and baby spinach in a rich creamy base with lemon and chilli.
The pizzas are not far behind either, with funghi topped with field mushrooms, fresh tarragon, mozzarella and tomato while the popular Sophia has marinated chicken, pepperoni, over-roasted sausage, tomato, mozzarella, finished with green chilli and fresh rosemary.
The extensive wine list offers a range of red, white, sparkling and rose wines in addition to beer and spirits while the dessert menu is attractive too, with a range of tempting fare from the homemade tiramisu to the torta cioccolata with its thick hazelnut chocolate base served with vanilla mascarpone. A really hot and tasty cup of coffee, tea or chocolate rounds the meal off well.
The fact that the restaurant hires their employees very selectively is evident in the friendly, cheerful and capable manner with which the staff treat diners, lending each outlet the personalised feel of a family run restaurant.

Montague House, 31 Broad Street, Wokingham, RG40 1AU [Map]
Prezzo has been delighting diners for over eight years, and this Italian restaurant chain has since been able to expand throughout large parts of England and Scotland with some 141 outlets.
Interestingly, the company seeks to restore either impressive buildings or ones of local interest. The conversion of the Newbury library and other listed buildings, such as those in Salisbury, Romsey and Mayfair, are all welcome examples of 'new use'. Their trendy and sophisticated décor usually consists of tiled or wooden floors with delicate lights and colourful paintings, along with wooden furniture and sparkling cutlery, creating a setting that is suitable for a relaxed lunch, a family meal or an evening out with friends.
The restaurants are of particular appeal to those who like genuine Italian cuisine, and they use only the best seasonal products, many of which are imported directly from Italy. The menu includes pizza, pasta, risotto, grilled meats, fresh salads and frequently changing specials.
The freshly baked breads, like the garlic bread with mozzarella cheese, are perfect for sharing and give you adequate breathing space to order starters to follow. Crab cakes served with garlic mayonnaise or grilled goat's cheese with plum tomatoes and caramelised onions on foccacia bread with a balsamic glaze set the tone for a hearty meal. Best fun is to order an antipasto platter to share made up from seven well loved Italian nibbles.
Find pastas such as the unusual penne con salmone, with oak-roasted salmon, broccoli and fresh chillies in a red pesto and cream sauce, or firm favourites like spaghetti with meatballs, spaghetti Bolognese, and fusilli al pesto, asparagus spears with field mushrooms and roasted peppers in a basil pesto sauce.
Amongst the special pastas, the pollo mariano, seasoned chicken, pepperoni sausage, roasted peppers and fusilli in tomato sauce, is interesting and different. Italian menus would be incomplete without risotto, like tiger prawns with petits pois in a creamy saffron sauce.
Classic pizzas embrace, among a wide selection, the popular napoletana, topped with yellowfin tuna, tomato, white anchovies, capers, red onion, mozzarella and marinated olives, and the much loved quattro stagioni - pepperoni sausage, prosciutto ham, artichoke, field mushrooms, capers, marinated olives, mozzarella and tomato.
Specials could include the pollo Siciliana, char-grilled chicken breast, prosciutto ham and plum tomato slices, baked with their blend of cheese, only one example from the many tempting offerings that come out from the Prezzo kitchens.
You can accompany the food with a variety of tipples, though for many, Italian food requires Italian wines to be enjoyed to the full, ranging from house wine through Morellino di Scansano and Prosecco to liqueurs and beer, and there is espresso or fresh ground coffee to wind up an enjoyable meal, in company with a glass of grappa or sambuca.
This is Italian food at its attractive best, convincing and bringing together the traditional with the modern twist or two against a background of excellent value.
Prezzo is a lively group and opportunities to improve and update are never left on the table for long. Keep up to date with a quick click on their Website.

1 Forbury Square, The Forbury, Reading, RG1 3BB [Map]
Forbury's Restaurant is situated in the central square of a modern development opposite Forbury Garden in the centre of Reading; it has achieved many positive reviews since it opened along with a recommendation from Michelin since 2006, two AA Rosettes and inclusion in Harden's Recommended. The restaurant has been created by Xavier Le-Bellego whose name has become associated with fine food and dining.
Xavier has worked with the internationally famous Raymond Blanc, John Burton Race and Albert Roux before managing The Red House near Newbury where he received the coveted 'Gastro Pub of the Year' title for two consecutive years.
Forbury's offers unfussy renditions of modern French and British cuisines and some of the dishes that emerge from the kitchen could be foie gras with truffles, sauce gribiche and quenelle de brochet. Xavier passionately believes that 'good fresh food does not have to be expensive' and this is reflected in the menu admirably.
The modern and stylish restaurant is fully air conditioned and in addition to the main dining area, there is a private dining room, which can seat up to sixteen, a bar area, and a seating area on the terrace outside where diners on fine days can enjoy the pleasant outlook over Forbury Garden. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner each day from Monday to Saturday and for special functions and celebrations on Sunday.
The highly regarded à la carte menu offers starters such as pan-fried Cornish hand dived scallops, pea purée, pea shoots and black pudding; tian of Cornish crab and avocado, confit tomato and red pepper dressing, or gruyère gougère, fricassée of wild mushrooms and poached duck egg. Main courses could include Ashampstead pig's head cooked three ways; squid ink fafarelle with squid, clams, prawns and rosemary cream, or grilled 7oz Gatcombe Farm angus rib-eye steak, also available in 9oz.
Don't miss the enticing range of desserts that include passion fruit soufflé; Amedei dark chocolate fondant, roasted banana and dark chocolate ice cream, or a Braeburn apple tarte tatin for two to share.
The market menu is good value for money and is available for lunch and dinner. Some of the options there are salmon gravadlax and horseradish cream, followed by roasted loin of English pork with roast potatoes, finishing with treacle tart with hot sauce anglaise; there is a choice of four dishes in each course.
Whether it is good food or wine, the French are not too far from it and Forburys's wine list which features around 240 wines from across the world was mentioned in the AA Notable Wine List for 2008. Some of these wines are available by the glass and are a fantastic accompaniment to the meal or just on their own too.
During the evening they are able to offer secure underground parking, however, this must be booked in advance when you book your table. For more information on everything from private dining, the wine list and latest menus, do have a look at their comprehensive Website.
