Luxury takes on many forms and, in Buckingham, the well-known Villiers Hotel is probably a very good example of a sumptuously decorated hotel with excellent food and accommodation, all of which come together with great aplomb. Situated right in the heart of the town, this is a fabulous place if you plan to host a wedding because everything is custom designed to make the day extra special. It's also a good option for more mundane events like conferences and business meetings or even if you're simply keen on soaking up the surrounding sights.

Their AA 2 rosette awarded restaurant offers menus with starters such as foie gras and chicken liver mousse, duck rillette and rhubarb compote. Mains could include delights such as roasted fillet of sea bream, brandade potatoes and horseradish sauce. For dessert, the lemon and ginger honeycomb posset with almond brittle is delightful without becoming overwhelming. The bar is stocked with real ales and a very good range of wines and spirits from across the world.

La Chouette

Westlington Green, Dinton, nr Aylesbury, HP17 8UW [Map]

Quite a character restaurant here. Frederic Desmette is the chef, waiter, barman - Oh! Yes - and the owner. He combines all these roles with an élan that is both admirable and wise. Quite a character restaurant here. Frederic Desmette is the chef, waiter, barman - Oh! Yes - and the owner. He combines all these roles with an élan that is both admirable and wise. Since wisdom is an attribute normally associated with owls it is hardly surprising that the place is called La Chouette.

The décor is friendly and relaxing and pink predominates. The kitchen calls for the best of fresh ingredients, including fish and game, with desserts being something of a lucky (but seldom disappointing) dip.

Lunch of three courses is an absolute snip at £11. In the absence of too much in the way of Belgian availability, France predominates on the wine list, including two house wines at £11.50 a bottle.

In 1887 Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild was in the throes of building his magnificent Renaissance chateau on top of the nearby hill and what is now The Five Arrows was run up to provide accommodation for the upper echelons of those involved in its construction. Given that purpose it seems unlikely that Baron's successors would have had a problem with the house becoming a pub with restaurant and rooms.

Rapidly gaining a reputation for excellence, with several awards and a highly enthusiastic public following, it seems as though the Five Arrows is destined for great things. The crayfish tail salad with dill is legendary and in season game from the Estate makes a welcome appearance on the menu.

Another legendary and recurring item on the menu is the honeycomb ice cream, known only to one chef at a time apparently. I prefer not to think what happens to chefs when they move on. The Rothschild influence is apparent in the wine list, including, I was glad to see, some of the fruits of their Chilean vineyards.

Hartwell House is a magnificent 18th century country house situated some 45 minutes by car from London Heathrow and only one hour by road or rail from central London. Formerly the home of the exiled King of France, Louis VIII, it has been the home to many eminent guests and is now one of the top country house hotels. Standing in 90 acres of parkland with a lake spanned by a stone bridge, a ruined church and many 18th century follies and garden buildings, Hartwell House is the perfect venue to enjoy a superb lunch or dinner with friends, or linger overnight to fully enjoy this wonderful house.

The 3 AA Rosette restaurant situated in the John Soane dining room continues the theme of regal dining, producing mainly English dishes of the highest quality using both local, British and international ingredients, cooked simply yet retaining clear flavours. The à la carte dinner menu may include duck liver parfait with rhubarb crumble and corn leaf salad, pan fried fillet of wild seabass with crushed potatoes flavoured with herbs, globe artichokes and fennel froth, and lemon pavlova with wild strawberries and rose syrup.

No self-respecting French monarch would be without his wine cellar, even in exile, and the owners of Hartwell House have seen to it that this area has not been neglected either, with some 400 wines tucked away in a perfect temperature.

YO! Sushi High Wycombe is a vital gastronomic experience rather than simply a place to eat sushi. This exciting and visually appealing Japanese delicacy, almost a cuisine in itself and going back to the 4th century BC, is fast rising in popularity for reasons of both taste and health, as well as its companionable setting. The restaurants offer a range of delectable nibbles that are attractively presented and revolve on a gently moving belt in front of customers, allowing them to sample a real wealth of varieties and eat just what they like best as often as they wish.

Contrary to many people's perception of sushi as raw fish, it comes in many forms drawing heavily on rice, fish, vegetables and seafood but the great variety arises chiefly from the different fillings and toppings, condiments, and the way these are combined. Often the same ingredients may be assembled in a traditional or a contemporary way, yet creating widely differing tastes.

Some of the most popular types are sashimi rolls, made from raw or seared slices of salmon and tuna and meant to be eaten within a couple of hours of being put together. Other options include cones of seaweed with rice and fillings and the little boat shaped parcels called gunkans. Miso soups, salads and nigiri sushi made of rice with toppings all add to its strong visual appeal.

Great beers like Asahi Super Dry and Sapporo support the food superbly, as well as hot and cold sake for those who want to sustain the Japanese experience. The menu also has non-alcoholic drinks and a limited list of wines and champagne. For dessert try the dorayaki, mochi or settle for fresh fruit.

The experience of having a meal at YO! Sushi is enriched by the unique array that appears as if by magic before the diner, with its unique colour coded pricing system. But the real pull is the fresh, healthy and tasty food that keeps people returning to their outlets across the UK.
