A well-established favourite in the midst of a gastronomic disaster area, this amiable old pub, built in the early 17th century and first licensed then, does come up with the goods. The cooking may not be haute cuisine but the spread and imagination displayed within the menu is impressive and there is a friendly air of permanence around; choices could run to lamb shank, slow baked with fresh tomatoes, baby onions, mint and red wine or roast breast of English duck, cooked pink and served on a potato and herb rosti with a mixed pepper, olive and caper salsa.
