The evening menu is revealed in à la carte form on the blackboard, so expect to find a game quartet with saddle of rabbit, pheasant, partridge and pigeon, or pan-fried chicken livers on black pudding and raspberry dressing. The opening of Harveys in June 2009 was the realization of a dream for the husband-and-wife team of Richard and Sherry Martin, whose "Kent Inns of Distinction" group acquired and re-developed the previously derelict site. Overlooking England's only Royal harbor, the venue commands fantastic views of the marina and across the English Channel. The former pub has re-invented itself as a modern, light and airy restaurant arranged over two individually styled floors. Harveys has recently been awarded the prestigious AA Rosette for its food and wine.

Poached duck egg, dry cured bacon, hollandaise sauce, and rope grown mussels, garlic, and dry white wine and cream reduction can present unique flavours to the palate. Aged rook's herd fillet of beef, grill garnish béarnaise sauce, and hand cut chips, and roast darne of Ramsgate cod are some of the signature dishes that feature on the eclectic menu. Before you polish off your plate ask for pistachio soufflé or dark chocolate fondant pudding.

The kitchen sources fresh ingredients ensuring that visitors get traditional pizzas, pastas and salads at their best.

If you are the adventurous type then order the piri piri pizza topped with tomato sauce, pieces, mozzarella flordilatte, marinated slices of pp chicken breast, Rosquito hot sweet chilli peppers, chopped red onions and black olives. Cold sliced beef dressed with virgin olive oil, fresh lemon juice and parmesan reggiano flakes makes a modest dish before moving on to the main event consisting of mussels in garlic, tomatoes, wine, herbs and a touch of chilli. Two scoops of gelato on a bed of fruit salad, topped with whipped cream and roasted almond flakes could provide the perfect end to a happy meal.

Pizza Express remains a hugely popular bedrock of casual eating. Its popularity is testimony to the fact that across the country, they have restaurants where you will always be guaranteed a good nosh, with children's tastes being well catered for.

Pizza Express has gone even more Roman, and following the success of that particular example of listening to their public have introduced Romana pizzas, including the scorching Etna and the hearty Siciliana.

These pizzas are now thinner, bigger and crispier, and if that sounds like a marketing line, it is. However, unlike many such lines, this one is true, and their quality is always consistent, though cleverly they have still managed to retain a homemade feel to their pizzas.

As an alternative to pizza, try their pollo pesto - cavatappi pasta with torn chicken breast, mushrooms, red onions and mozzarella in a creamy gruyere, parmesan and pesto sauce and finished with grana padano - or the niçoise salad with mixed leaves, yellowfin tuna, free range egg, green beans, potatoes and tomatoes with olives, anchovies, capers and house dressing.

Many of the big chains have come a long way, and Pizza Express is certainly amongst them. One of the first to be quoted on the Stock Exchange - in 1993 - Pizza Express is not a franchise operation and retains tight control through its own staff.

Their wine list - though short - contains some surprisingly good offerings, especially their intense Australian Chardonnay, and a big, full-bodied Merlot from Cusumano, Sicilia.

The restaurant serves seasonal food, fine wines and cocktails in a charming Victorian warehouse set within a beautiful secluded courtyard just a minute from the sea.

The café menu lists delights such as smoked mackerel pate and toast with pickled cucumber and ham, bubble and squeak with mustard sauce. Cup cakes and brownies are also at hand to accompany your choice of teas and coffee. In the main offerings you can expect to find squid with samphire, lentils and tomato, kiwi and chili salsa and roast Dexter rump steak with sautéed potatoes and horseradish. The dessert options include Rose Gray's chocolate nemesis with hibiscus salt and crème fraîche and date cake with toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream.
