The Chequers in Burcot near Abingdon is believed to have been an inn for the last four centuries. Steeped in rich history, the place underwent a much needed cosmetic re-construction in January 2006 under the supervision of seasoned managers, Laura and Steve Sanderson. Thanks to their expertise and experience, the pub now enjoys a contemporary look with an impressive thatched roof, timber frames and black and white leather chairs that re-sound the chequerboard theme. Even the garden has had a brilliant make-over and is ideal for al fresco lunches.

The menu is extensive with both traditional pub grubs as well as restaurant-style dishes. Manager Steve mans the stove, and it is evident that he's found his calling. Try the Oxford gold pork sausages, homemade fish pie, Scotsgrove farm fish-eye rib steak and conclude with the sticky toffee pudding or cheeseboard. The atmosphere is lively and perfect for any occasion. The service is great and you can tell the owners love what they do.
