Chequers, The

The Chequers in Burcot near Abingdon is believed to have been an inn for the last four centuries. Steeped in rich history, the place underwent a much needed cosmetic re-construction in January 2006 under the supervision of seasoned managers, Laura and Steve Sanderson.

Cherwell Boathouse, The

Book Online

When college food loses its charm, or you just plain want a change, it doesn't have to be obvious comfort food. In this uncompromising and thinly disguised boathouse excellent, tasty fare is available for prices that will still leave at least some of the grant intact.

  • Address: Bardwell Road, Oxford, OX2 6ST (Map)
  • Cuisine(s): English, French
  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: £22.00, Dinner: £37.00

Chiang Mai Kitchen

The incidence of ethnic restaurants in Oxford can be no coincidence and is to a degree matched by Cambridge, though with nothing like the same intensity. Does this indicate a better standard of in-house catering in the Fenland bastion - I doubt it.

  • Address: Kemp Hall Passage, 130A High Street, Oxford, OX1 4DH (Map)
  • Cuisine(s): Thai
  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: N/A, Dinner: £37.00

Chutney's Indian Brasserie

Believed by many to be amongst the best of the ethnic cuisines that compete for the privilege of catering ex officio to the future governing classes. Well, I do like being provocative occasionally but there is little reason to doubt the claim for Chutney's ascendancy.

  • Address: 36 St Michael's Street, Oxford, OX1 2EB (Map)
  • Cuisine(s): Indian
  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: N/A, Dinner: £27.00

Cibo!

In bright new premises offering a warm, friendly environment where informal dining is positively encouraged. The overriding influence is without doubt Italian as evidenced by a good range of homemade pastas and, on the cellar side, an interesting selection of Italian organic wines.

  • Address: 4 South Parade, Summertown, Oxford, OX2 7JL (Map)
  • Cuisine(s): Italian
  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: N/A, Dinner: £34.00

Clanfield Tavern, The

Book Online

In the heart of the Cotswolds in the pretty village of Clanfield, The Clanfield Tavern has been welcoming locals and travellers since 1610. Pale walls give the traditional oak-beamed dining room a modern feel, while the bright conservatory has an open, airy atmosphere and a striking wine wall.

  • Address: Bampton Road, Clanfield, nr Faringdon, OX18 2RG (Map)

  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: N/A, Dinner: £32.00

Cotswold Plough Restaurant & Hotel, The

A glorious Elizabethan manor house on the edge of the Cotswolds, not widely known but cherished by those who do. The cooking is a blend of French and English which works to good effect and produces such dishes as duck and wild mushroom pate with red onion marmalade and continental leaves, a fillet of Aberdeen Angus beef with fresh tagliatelle and a green peppercorn sauce, and creme brulee with tiny figs marinated in rum.

  • Address: Bourton Road, Clanfield, OX18 2RB (Map)

Crooked Billet, The

One of those rave review country inns which under spirited and determined leadership has built up a great reputation - and kept it. In 1989 Paul Clerehugh took over the Billet and its name for good food, founded on cooking in the eclectic manner, has resulted in a varied and attractive menu, with many surprises and innovations.
