New Malden's abundance of Korean restaurants maybe some what unusual but those who have got used to the cuisine of this Eastern country will most likely swear by the Hamgipak Café on High Street. This extremely small diner is easy to miss and those who do find it might not have a place to sit. This however has not deterred locals in any way and at any time of the day, this café is full and brimming with satisfied customers. Décor is minimal and focus is absolutely on producing some really good Korean food.

The reasonably priced menu offers steamed dumplings, noodle based dishes, hot pots, stir fried, barbeques and the traditional jjigae, a spicy stew made from meat or the ubiquitous kimchi. Bowls of white rice accompany the stews along with banchan, side dishes of pickled and spicy vegetables and on cold, wintry days this hearty meal can warm you through completely.

Expect to find some typical and not so typical Indian cuisine in this High Street restaurant which is warm and exuberant in its welcome. It's been over a decade since Lal Akash started out but they have gradually become one of the popular dining destinations in Surrey. While their décor is unpretentious and simple, the staff members are friendly and helpful and the food is prepared with utmost care.

Amongst the starters, there are a host of choices such as prawn and cod cutlets, lime and coriander flavoured stir fried scallops and marinated chicken stir fried with mustard and curry leaves. For the main course, you could choose from the balti, tandoori and traditional items, while some of their signature dishes include chicken Chettinad, spicy South Indian curry, Kashmiri gushtaba, pounded meat balls cooked in curd gravy and jal tarang, a selection of seafood cooked in tamarind and coconut milk.

Jee's, is just one of a number of Korean restaurants in the New Malden area, thanks to a strong local Korean population. This particular restaurant though is one of the most popular of its kind thanks to exceptionally good cooking. It isn't much to look at but with food like this and low prices no one seems to worry too much. On the menu you'll find plenty of spicy chilli based recipes and a good mixture of meat, vegetable and fish dishes. It certainly pays to be a little experimental at Jee's so be sure to try some of the more unusual dishes, or alternatively plump for a set menu option to avoid the hassle of choosing for yourself.

The industrial location at Burlington Road might prove to be somewhat of a deterrent but if you're determined to have some really good Korean food then you won't be disappointed once you enter HanKook. The interior is cosy, all wood and warmth with traditional low tables that are prominent among Asian restaurants. The sliding screens add an element of mystery and the friendly staff members are most helpful.

The menu is populated with authentic Korean dishes, which are quite large and are most suited for sharing. There are the ubiquitous kimchi based dishes and juicy and flavourful LA style ribs while seafood jjigae bubbling hot makes a wonderful meal in itself. The Oriental atmosphere is enhanced with the sashimi dishes that are popular there. HanKook is ideally suited for celebrations with family and friends or maybe just a quiet meal with someone special.
