Hallidays
Watery Lane, Funtington, Chichester, PO18 9LF [Map]
This is a charming family run restaurant housed in a small thirteenth century listed thatched building at the foot of the South Downs. A lovely little Sussex dwelling given a new lease of life by chef Andy Stephenson, and his wife Julia, who have owned it since nineteen-ninety-seven, they make it their pleasure to run a tightly-ordered, friendly ship, with thirty seats in the beamed dining room. The venue has a relaxed atmosphere with an emphasis on guests' enjoyment of the food and wine.
The modern British cuisine has gained many accolades, including 2 AA rosettes, and entries into both the Michelin and the Good Food Guide. One member of the family scours the surrounding countryside looking for the best and sometimes the unusual produce, frequently attended by great success. The establishment is proud to serve all locally sourced ingredients, sticking to seasonal food. The extensive wine list covers all parts of the world.

Anglesey Arms at Halnaker, The
Halnaker, nr Chichester, PO18 0NQ [Map]
In their endeavour to provide good food along with traditional pub fare too many country inns are losing their roots as the centre of village life. The Anglesey Arms, a Georgian country pub with a separate dining room and large garden does well to blend the two successfully. People travel to taste their renowned beers and seasonal specialities in the warm and cordial atmosphere created by owners Roger and Jools Jackson.
As tourists back from a trip to the nearby Boxgrove archaeological site nurse their drink and try the homemade Selsey crab pate with brown toast, the locals could be sharing a plate of charcuterie, marinated olives and artichokes with warm ciabatta, whilst discussing the odds at the famous horse racing event affectionately called Glorious Goodwood. A visit there is incomplete without their famous Scotch fillet and sirloin steaks.
On the booze front there is Stowford Press Cider and an excellent range of lagers, minerals, spirits, liqueurs and wines.

Smith & Western - Chichester
Station Approach, Chichester, PO19 8DN [Map]
Smith and Western provide a good dose of fun for your family along with healthy, filling food. The Chichester branch of the ten year old chain is situated near the station and carries forward the country, western and cowboy theme with wagons, hay bales and saddles dotting the interior. Cowboy Ken's play area for children and friendly efficient staff complete the setting for a unique outing.
You can start with chicken wings coated in barbeque sauce or southern comfort glaze, served with celery sticks and blue cheese dip before moving on to T-bone steak, containing twenty ounces of succulent prime beef served with home fries of baked potato and coleslaw. A strawberry shortcake sundae does mighty well in rounding off this hearty meal.
This is a sampler from one-third of the menu; there are also the fajitas, smoked marinades, salads, sandwiches, burgers and specialities sections. A good range of cocktails and a selection of wines are available for those who enjoy a drink.

Cider House Restaurant & Bar, The
Pumpbottom Farm, Birdham Road, Appledram, nr Chichester, PO20 7EH [Map]
Chef/Owner Tony and his wife Julia have taken a cow shed on a farm and created a charming, sophisticated restaurant. The Cider House accommodates both intimate dinners indoors as well as providing al fresco dining during summer. Tony, who hosted his own television show entitled "Dish'in it out" in New Zealand, is passionate about food, and Julia makes sure the guests are comfortable and the service is top quality.
The understated menu changes a little bit all the time making the most of fresh seasonal produce and the fare is served in a style that is stunning, yet simple and uncomplicated.
Honey and lime cured Scottish salmons for starters followed by roasted rump of Southdowns lamb and a sweet ending in nutmeg baked rice pudding is one route to a satisfying meal there. Try Appledram Cider, produced on the farm by Julian and Kathy Moores, or any of the wines that have been carefully selected.
