Brasserie Blanc - Chichester
Richmond House, The Square, Chichester, PO19 7SJ [Map]
One of the greatest pleasures in life for celebrity chef Raymond Blanc is sharing a good meal with family and friends. He achieves this through Brasserie Blanc, where his team take great joy in serving authentic French cuisine in a modern, brasserie atmosphere. All their dishes use the finest ingredients, sustainable freedom foods, free range and natural or wild produce.
With eight outlets, the brasserie retains the individuality of each of the locations, while maintaining a uniform standard of food and service. The menu has several signature dishes like Maman Blanc's miscellany of salads, Loch Fyne mussels and Burgundy snails in garlic herb butter.
Some interesting mains are Cumberland sausages with bubble and squeak, Aberdeenshire rump steak and chips, Dutch calf's liver served with bacon, sage and smooth mash, and of course, Raymond's smoked haddock, leek and gruyère fish cake. There is a healthy selection of children's options also.
The wine list is French in concept, but includes New World wines, and offers over forty-five varieties, ensuring there is something for everyone. In addition to a range of French cheeses, selected by the Premier Cheese Company, you could settle for their favourite dessert, baked Alaska with flaming Grand Marnier, to end the meal on a sweet note.

Comme Ca Restaurant
67 Broyle Road, Chichester, PO19 6BD [Map]
Presumably along the Atlantic coast of France are little outposts of England, serving classic English cuisine, in the same way that Comme Ca delights the English with its totally French presentation on this side of the Channel. It is possible even to feel slightly embarrassed should you have no command of the language.
However, like love the language of food is international and to prove it try the Normandy chicken liver pate flavoured with Armagnac and supported by an apple jelly. The grilled fillet of beef it is to be hoped will be English but the Noilly Prat glaze and Roquefort cream sauce derive from elsewhere.
House wine is a reasonable £12.95 and the ambience totally French; it is worth noting that they stay open sensible hours for the nearby Theatre.

Place at The Ship, The
The Ship Hotel, North Street, Chichester, PO19 1NH [Map]
Located within a Grade II listed building dating back to the 18th century, The Ship Hotel retains much of its Georgian splendour and the in-house restaurant with its honey-coloured oak floors and comfortable chairs help to create a tranquil atmosphere.
The cooking is quite straightforward and brings out the finest flavours in some of the best locally sourced ingredients. For dinner there is a selection of bread and olives before moving on to starters of, say, Cullen skink with Arbroath smokies, potatoes and onion in a creamy broth. The fish caught in the waters off Chichester are renowned so whet your appetite with thoughts of smoked haddock fishcakes with creamy mash in golden crumbs with a watercress sauce.
You could also try the local pork lion cutlet on a classic bean cassoulet before rounding off the meal with a warm treacle tart with crème anglaise, perhaps assisted by a sliver or two of that Sussex broad oak cheddar.

Field & Fork - Pallant House Gallery
9 North Pallant, Chichester, PO19 1TJ [Map]
Field and Fork the name can't be a better indicator of the restaurant's dedication to sourcing locally and thoughtfully. Simple and sophisticated dining is what it's all about and the cooking of Roux brothers-trained Sam Mahoney is indeed notable, while Janet does a commendable job of flexing her customer service skills.
A choice of starters include Parmesan glazed poached egg tartlet with smoked pancetta and spinach, and Welsh rarebit glazed fillet of salmon, spiced apple and chicory. Main courses are well-handled with confit of rabbit with parsley and mustard, carrot puree and salsify, and poached breast of free range duck with purple sprouting broccoli and aromatic vegetable broth.
