A consistently good global menu with a varied choice of homemade dishes makes this cottage-like pub a popular spot, a tempting start is created by their cream of butternut squash soup; warm shredded ham hock and Puy lentil salad with grain mustard or wild mushroom tortellini with mushroom cream create.

In the same vein you might follow with pork and leek sausages with mashed potato, onion marmalade and red wine jus; sautéed scallops with buttered spinach and herb cream or Scottish rib-eye steak with french fries, mushroom and tomatoes. However, desserts are their forte, with autumn berry pudding; white chocolate panna cotta; dark chocolate tart with vanilla cream or vanilla crème brûlée.

Eating is split between a small candle lit upper room and a larger dining area. The large front garden is lovely in the summer and there is an 'adult only' terrace at the rear of the pub under a majestic maple tree. The Good Pub Guide 2004 made them 'County Dining Pub of the Year', quite an accolade, and for the last six years they have been awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand - an award for good food at moderate prices.

The Jolly Tanners is one of those lovely pubs that take its customers back to the good old days when life was slightly less complicated and people had more time to sit down, relax and enjoy a drink and some delicious food.

The popular free house situated in the small village of Staplefield is independently run and the emphasis is on providing guests with a constantly changing choice of real ales and tasty home cooked food. Their dedication shines through dishes such as garlic king prawns, breaded whole tail scampi, homemade honey roast ham, mushroom risotto in white wine and cream sauce and steak and kidney pie, among others.

Tables are available in the dining room, bars and in the pub garden. Within watchful distance of the garden is a grassy play area for the children. There are quiz nights every Thursday and live music on certain weekends.

Apparently, during the 19th century it was difficult for the owners of this inn to gain a license, so, after a prolonged legal battle with the locals, when they finally managed it in 1848 - they aptly named it The Victory Inn. The name also holds a resonance for the cricket team and its supporters as matches are played on the green, which The Victory overlooks.

The starters there tick all the boxes from onion bhaji and vegetable samosa served on a curry sauce with poppadoms, to fresh anchovies marinated in olive oil and vinegar and served with crackers. The menu wanders through familiar dishes like fish pie, fresh fillets of salmon, cod and prawns in a white wine sauce topped with cheddar mash and red Thai chicken curry, breast of chicken cooked in Thai spices with coconut milk, served with fragrant rice, for the main course. The house speciality of steak and kidney pudding is a crowd pleaser.
