George & Dragon

Another of those delightful and timeless inns along the South Downs where it is possible to sit down and enjoy good, honest food, well-kept beer, a decent choice of wine and, if you want it, company which is fundamentally different from the thrusting, over-important, self-opinionated froth that seems to grow at an alarming rate in the big world beyond.

  • Address: Burpham, Arundel, BN18 9RR (Map)
  • Cuisine(s): British, Mediterranean, Modern European
  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: N/A, Dinner: £35.00

George in Rye, The

Once a busy coaching inn, The George is now an even busier and much trendier hotel, with a thriving restaurant at its centre. The whole place has recently (2006) undergone a major refurbishment, one of those proper ones where the best has been retained and the changes are in the best of taste.

  • Address: 98 High Street, Rye, TN31 7JT (Map)
  • Cuisine(s): Modern British
  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: N/A, Dinner: £30.00

George, The

Down near the station is the rejuvenated pub, still called The George, but with a new mission in life to serve as a location for that most unlikely of creatures, a vegetarian boozer. One glimpse at the menu was enough to get even my culinary adrenalin going and clearly many others take a similar view to judge by the way the place is overrun.

  • Address: 5 Trafalgar Street, North Laine, Brighton, BN1 4EQ (Map)
  • Cuisine(s): Vegetarian
  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: N/A, Dinner: £21.00

Giant's Rest

Nestling at the foot of South Downs and watched over by the impressive Longman of Wilmington, this warm, welcoming Victorian pub with its long wood-floored bar and adjacent open areas is simply furnished with old pews and pine tables.

  • Address: The Street, Polegate, Wilmington, BN26 5SQ (Map)
  • Cuisine(s): Pub, British
  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: N/A, Dinner: £28.00

Ginger Fox, The

The Ginger Fox Public House is the most recent addition to the group of restaurants that owns the Ginger Pig, The Gingerman in Norfolk Square and Gingerman at Drakes - all in and around the Brighton area.

  • Address: Henfield Road, Albourne, nr Brighton, BN6 9EA (Map)
  • Cuisine(s): British
  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: N/A, Dinner: £28.00

Ginger Pig, The

The Ginger Pig is the latest venture set up by husband and wife team, Ben and Pamela McKellar, of Gingerman Restaurant fame, continuing their philosophy to create fresh, simply cooked, seasonal dishes in an environment as hearty as the food served.

  • Address: 3 Hove Street, Hove, BN3 2TR (Map)
  • Cuisine(s): French, Modern European
  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: £24.00, Dinner: £33.00

Gingerman - Norfolk Square, The

Situated rather unpromisingly off the south edge of Norfolk Square, it's all well worth finding with truly modern and unaffected cooking in relaxed and friendly surroundings, which normally throb to the happy noises of contented customers.

  • Address: 21a Norfolk Square, Brighton, BN1 2PD (Map)
  • Cuisine(s): British, French, Modern European
  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: £22.00, Dinner: £39.00

Gingerman at Drakes

The Gingerman is an essential part of the new boutique hotel in Brighton, Drakes. As such it enjoys the same degree of sophistication as the rest of the project and one is left with the notion that the Regency crowd who created the Brighton Dome would feel very much at home here.

  • Address: Drakes of Brington, 43-44 Marine Parade, Brighton, BN2 1PE (Map)
  • Cuisine(s): Modern British, Modern European
  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: £24.00, Dinner: £45.00
