71 Bell Street, Reigate, RH2 7AN [Map]
La Barbe may have been around for a long time now but its bright and fresh look perfectly disguises the memorable twenty-nine years that have passed by. They pride themselves in their claim to be the only 'truly French' restaurant in Reigate and are keen to see diners enjoy a delightful Gallic experience.
The décor is charming with red terracotta style flooring in striking contrast with the pastel shaded walls filled with quirky sketches. The convivial atmosphere provides the background for well spaced tables with full napery is beautifully set for a relaxed meal, balanced with warm and friendly service.
Head Chef Laurent Pacaud presents a new menu every season and the artistically influenced dishes are a feast to the eyes and taste buds. La Barbe's longevity may also be attributed to the fact that they are sensitive enough to cater for the discerning diner who is now more health conscious and well versed with haute cuisine. A fusion enthusiast might be disheartened but their fancy-free style of cooking, which displays loyalty to France, is infinitely appealing.
The menu is presented in French with translations thoughtfully provided, so you could start with snails cooked in garlic butter, or fresh tuna tartar complemented by a tomato salsa. This could be followed by chicken supreme filled with an aniseed stuffing and dill sauce with fresh pasta, or maybe sirloin steak with wild mushroom sauce, shredded potato and oyster mushroom pancake.
In the circumstances it might be considered impolite to ignore the wonderful range of French cheeses, but should you wish to indulge a sweet tooth, apricot and almond tart accompanied by a Muscat wine sorbet or lavender infused crème brûlée could well fit the bill. The wine list offers a venerable range of French wines, with a few from the New World thrown in for good measure.
A very large and exotic feather in La Barbe's cap is its outdoor events arm, where the same culinary presentation and standards that prevail in the restaurant can be deployed and for your special occasion at home or different venue. Owner Serge Tassi and his team are certainly not resting on past laurels but are staying true to what they do best - enchanting customers with classic French cuisine.

Canterbury Road, Wingham, Canterbury, CT3 1BB [Map]
This imposing 13th century inn, built in the reign of King John I, originally formed part of a monastery, and has retained its antiquity well through the centuries. Well favoured by Egon Ronay's 2006 Guide, and Les Routiers, it was taken over in 2004 by Richard and Sherry Martin and is now visibly thriving under their ownership.
Head Chef Steve Hogben-Lambert makes good use of the locally caught fresh fish and his a la carte menu pays more than a passing tribute to its quality. Starters might consist of wild risotto of brown shrimp, made with cockles and razor clam with sorrel and double cream, a Lagavulin cured wild salmon with tiger tail prawns served with dill and mustard sauce or smoked Dungeness eel with fresh horseradish mousse and oak smoked sprats. A lobster bisque has all the piquancy that one expects in that fine but simple dish, and foie gras with port and rosemary jelly is served with toasted brioche and a shot glass of Chapel Down Nectar.
Main courses are classified as runners or swimmers, and amongst the former expect to meet roasted Romney Marsh lamb rump, free range pork and parsley bangers served with herbed mash and three onion gravy, char grilled best end of English veal cop, supreme of local free range chicken wrapped in air-dried ham and served with fondant potato, roasted Jerusalem artichoke and tarragon sauce.
Wild mushroom risotto is the real thing, with oyster, chestnut, Portobello and shitake mushrooms. Amongst the swimmers are beer battered haddock, cod and whiting cooked in a light batter of wheat beer, cumin and poppy seed, served with hand-cut chips and mint and pea puree, a very fleshy Whitstable seafood chowder, described as an ensemble of locally caught fish with saffron potatoes and chive, or a whole roasted line-caught local Gurnard with a confit of sweet cherry tomatoes and new potatoes.
Make sure not to miss enjoying the fascinating range of artisan-produced breads produced by Paul Hollywood, now resident locally after periods as Head Baker at Cliveden and The Dorchester.
A relatively brief but punchy wine list has been cleverly chosen to embrace quality and all tastes, with a welcome inclusion from Chapel Down, mainly whites but a 2003 Pinot Noir red, and a sparkling Pinot Brut deriving from Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc.
The Dog Inn is a place for those who relish the good things of life in an atmosphere that is both restful and welcoming. Learn more from a quick click on their excellent Website, including details of arrangements for licensed weddings.

The Whistling Duck, Lower Hatfield Road, Hertford, SG13 8XX [Map]
Overlooking the River Lea from Lower Hatfield Road, The Whistling Duck embodies the surrounding countryside, with a high profile menu that is an excellent flagship for British cooking with abundant choices; a Chef's brigade led by Head Chef Steve Bower, originally from Papillon, is hungry to ensure that The Whistling Duck always flies in top gear.
When pressed Steve said, "the heart of a good restaurant is its food and using only the very best fresh produce combined with the best of traditional British cooking with an added twist is exciting and fulfilling."
So what of the menu? A dozen or so dishes set the scene for a meal that will be remembered for all the right reasons. Lightly spiced fresh crab cakes are served with a sweet chilli salsa and garlic mayonnaise, whilst caramelised chicken livers comes with mushrooms, onions and balsamic syrup. The duck liver pâté may catch your interest too with its delicate hint of Armagnac wrapped in Parma ham.
They don't spare the fish here. There's a deluxe fisherman?s pie as well as a dreamy bouillabaisse with white wine, garlic, tomato and herb sauce well laced with crustaceans and served with garlic bread more than makes up for that. The ultimate seafood platter is designed with real addicts in mind, think trout, smoked salmon, crab, prawns, crayfish and mackerel roulade. Prime fillet of beef are served on a leek and potato rösti topped with a mild Stilton glaze, dressed with a rich Claret jus garnished with French bean parcels. Rack of lamb, honey roast duck breast and paupiette of pork fillet compete for the attention of diners whose interests are both cosmopolitan yet loyal to their well-honed and often simple tastes.
Sticky toffee pudding is almost a national dish since it escaped from Cartmel, but not always with the seriously rich fudge sauce that is applied to its person at The Whistling Duck. Amongst other desserts that catch the eye are the crêpes Suzette, wonderful wafer thin pancakes steeped in orange, caramel and Grand Marnier syrup before being served with a vanilla ice cream shot. An Ultimate Petite Selection of six positively mouth-watering desserts can, be warned, leave you wishing you had ordered them all - in full.
With their space and setting it is hardly surprising that catering for parties, large groups and special events is a way of life at The Whistling Duck. They're a very sociable lot in Hertfordshire too and partying out finds a warm welcome at the restaurant, with tailored arrangements a speciality. A lunchtime menu with good choices at very reasonable prices is always a good opportunity to test drive a restaurant with bigger things in mind.
Their Website is full of useful information attractively set out, in which pride is clearly taken. A good augury for a restaurant that you leave glowing with a sense of wellbeing.

35 Castle Street, Guildford, GU1 3UQ [Map]
Part of a small but perfectly formed group of French bistros, Côte Brasserie received the accolade of 'Best value restaurant in the UK' in the 2009 Good Food Guide, which, at a time when price trimming is the name of the game, must be quite some achievement, and their branch in Guildford is no exception to their general rule. Founded on the resurgence of interest in simple bistro cooking and as prevailing taste swings away from expensive and over-complicated cooking in restaurants, Côte goes for the classic dishes within an informal and friendly atmosphere.
The Guildford Côte opened in April 2009, open all day for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as any decent bistro should be, serving the neighbourhood as a first priority. In fine weather, it is worth knowing that they have a sunny outside terrace with views of the Castle.
Appetisers include pissaladière, delightful warm flatbread from Nice with caramelised onions and a choice of either anchovies, olives and parsley or Reblochon cheese and thyme. Mussels cooked in white wine can be taken as a starter or main course, and other starters could offer coarsely shredded duck and pork paté, breadcrumbed squid sautéed in garlic, or the ever popular steak tartare.
In the world of restaurant menus there is increasingly a short but attractive range of light mains, and Côte is no exception with a tuna Niçoise making a highly attractive dish with the addition of French beans, cherry tomatoes, black olives, peppers, new potatoes, egg, baby gem lettuce and red onion.
One of Côte's principal attractions is to have created a menu that prompts the customers to feel that what they'd really like to do is work their way through the entire menu which, whilst it may cause some consternation is undoubtedly the best option to have, if not to take. Consider steak haché for instance, char-grilled spiced chopped rump steak with frites and a cornichon and tomato relish, or Poulet Breton, corn fed chicken from rural Brittany, with an enticing choice of garlic butter or sauces.
Steaks at Côte start with a 7oz fillet, or 10oz rib-eyes and sirloin, char-grilled and served naturally with frites. Let's assume that you follow the French custom and insert a cheese course between the main and the desserts, be prepared for well kept Roquefort and Reblochon before tackling a chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream, or an outstanding crème caramel, a speciality of the house.
The supposition that a bistro which styles itself on the real thing should have a French wine list is by no means unreasonable, and Côtes does it with panache. Perfectly straightforward it plays much the same trick as the menu and as you flick through the list you are confronted with hard choices. Many are under the £20 mark, but there are excellent alternatives above that, and eight champagnes currently including a 2003 Henriot.
If I had to choose one word to sum up Côte I think it would have to be thoroughly genuine. Yes, I know that's two, but it underlines the difficultly of only making it in one. Do check their Website for menu changes and reservations.

London Road, Berkhamsted, HP4 2NB [Map]
Berkhamsted is a gorgeous town and was well in need of a gorgeous pub. Alan Turtill had rescued and restored the Old Mill, keeping what remains of its original Georgian and Victorian features, but making the whole place light and airy. The unloved yard at the back has been turned into a special space - the mill race crashes over the weir into a deep pool - and the garden borders the Grand Union Canal, perfect for watching the boats slide by on lazy summer evenings. The Old Mill remains a real pub, where you're just as welcome to enjoy a decent pint of bitter at the bar as a three course meal or bar snack.
It would be possible to enlarge upon all this indefinitely, but our purpose here is to tell you about The Old Mill and how they put into practice their strongly held principles. There is something very heartening to see sad old inns, particularly those whose character has refused to bow to neglect, being restored to useful life and becoming part of life's pattern in their particular community.
Senior Sous Chef Stefan Brodin and his team have designed a menu featuring traditional pub favourites as well as something a little different. They are in the kitchen everyday preparing all the dishes fresh on the premises. On their menu, you will find the very best quality fresh ingredients - fantastic sausages; free range chicken; moules marinière and mini loaf; 28 day dry-aged Aberdeenshire 24oz cote boeuf - sourced from producers who take pride in their products and an ethical stance in their production.
The Old Mill menu always makes the most of seasonal ingredients - this ensures they avoid air-freighting and keeps us in touch with the cycle of the year - while combining the best of great British cooking and influences from around the world that are now part of our culture.
The deli board lists cheese, charcuterie, veggie, favourites, fruit and vegetables, and fish or the customer can have the option of making their own board from the five options. The deli can be enjoyed as starters, nibbles or tapas. If the conversation level is proving demanding let the restaurant do the work for you by selecting a selection from one of the five.
The Old Mill is open from 10am for breakfast. Start the day with a hearty full English or bacon or sausage sandwich and a glass of champagne with friends. The express menu also operates from noon to 6 pm, offering Mediterranean vegetable with goats' cheese tart, cherry tomato and herb salad, chips and burgers as well. Noon to 3pm, and 6.00pm to 10pm their a la carte menu is on offer with an ample selection of dishes which pulls in the locals who have quickly come to regard The Old Mill as a second home.
Afternoon tea is served everyday from 12pm - 6pm while, sandwiches with smoked salmon or Mediterranean vegetables are served with chips or soup of the day, Monday to Saturday.
A relatively short but punchy wine list mingles well with the menu, so few will quibble with this much needed addition to the local scene.
A swift click on their Website will keep you in the picture over menu changes, special offers and events. You could also consider visiting The Thatch at Thame, sister pub and only 30 mins from The Old Mill.

The Beefeater Grill range of restaurants, owned by the well established firm of Whitbread has transformed over time into what is now predominantly a cooking platform for chargrill. The restaurants are warm, modern and stylish, with low lighting and contemporary artwork. A comfortable, cosy, mainly booth layout offers guests their own space with no feeling of being hurried at any point. Staff are friendly and helpful if need be - what a difference that can make to a good evening out.
Be it the wide open spaces of Argentina, the intimate setting of a French restaurant, or a busy grill in London's West End, there's no denying the popularity of chargrill. As the production of quality beef, chicken, fish and lamb has grown, prices have come down by comparison, and the simple and traditional art of minimally cooking dishes by chargrill, sealing in the flavours and tastes by intense heat has caught the public imagination.
All the steaks at Beefeater Grill are matured for a minimum of 28 days before being seasoned. Whether it be juicy rib eye, the classic sirloin, that emblem of the Sunday lunch, a tender fillet, or a delicious 7oz rump, all grilled to your own specification, you're never far away from perfection. Even beefburgers have shaken off their dubious image and the highly popular Beefeater burgers are made from 100% beef.
The popular sirloin with giant prawns offers a treat to those for whom an alliance between sea and pasture is a natural attraction, whilst a 16oz steak platter links rump, fillet, sirloin and rib eye into one mouth-watering dish served with chips, battered onion rings, grilled tomato, a flat mushroom and peppercorn and brandy sauce.
Many of us love rib meat, and the rack of ribs at a Beefeater Grill has a meaty rack smoky flavour; maple ribs of pork with a choice of three sauces, mojito, smoked caramel and apple glaze, or Bourbon and black BBQ. And if all else fails and you are totally baffled by the wealth of choices, ask to have a word with the Steakmaster who will help find what is right for you, together with the best cooking method. These guys leave nothing to chance.
On a menu that is a delight to read, let alone choose a meal from, expect to find smaller dishes such as traditional prawn cocktail, whitebait, chicken liver pâté and baked Camembert, or juicy lamb koftas served with yoghurt and mint dip. There's something about a good steak meal that always leaves a gap for a little temptation to sweeten up the scene and from amongst twelve options look for Belgian chocolate cheesecake, treacle sponge pudding or a caramel apple crumble pie.
Throughout the day a wide range of more general dishes are yours for the ordering, sandwiches, jackets, classic favourites like fish and chips, pasta, salads, and sharing dishes of nachos, potato shells and a Beefeater Grill combo. Next door to many of the restaurants are Premier Inns, so staying the night whatever the circumstances need not be a problem.
And what about wine? Endorsed by Matthew Jukes, wine writer in the Daily Mail and bon viveur in his own right, a wine list that marches with the menu completes an impressive and compelling invitation to enjoy whatever takes your fancy at the nearest Beefeater Grill.
