The Hand and Sceptre offers a contemporary country dining experience in a relaxing and friendly environment. The pub dates back to 1728 and was named in honour of George Newhand, the original landlord. The building is wonderfully restored, incorporating the values of traditional pub hospitality with a modern design.

The ambience is simple and trendy, with seating at the bar within the restaurant or al fresco, in the shade of the huge umbrellas. The wine list has an even balance of New and Old World with a variety of styles to choose from different beers as well as over fifteen wines available by the glass.

The choices are simple with lots of tempting steaks, spit roasted meats, salads and pastas. To set the right note of fashionable sociability there are sharing plates, antipasti of Italian meats, dolcelatte, marinated vegetables and warm stone-baked flatbreads, or Mediterranean mezze of hummus, roasted vegetables, fregola, tzatziki, feta, spinach and ricotta pâté with flatbreads.

Amongst the appetisers there is freshly made soup; lamb koftas, mint yoghurt, kohlrabi, cumin and carrot salad, or dolcelatte and pear tart with red onion marmalade. Look, too, for scallops in the specials section.

The salads offer chargrilled chicken, courgette, fennel, apple, asparagus, hazelnut and balsamic dressing; for the seafood fiends some prawn and avocado with mango, bacon, orange and pomegranate vinaigrette appeal.

These days no self-respecting gastropub can afford to be without its pizza range; expect to find a classic margherita of cherry tomatoes, mozzarella, pomodoro and basil, the rustica with roasted Mediterranean vegetables, goats' cheese and cherry tomatoes, or the piccante with pepperoni, chorizo, tomato and jalapeños.

Pastas include linguini with tiger prawns, crab, chorizo, chilli, tomato and white wine, or tagliatelle with slow cooked Bolognaise and parmesan. For the big event there is always roast rump of lamb with sauce soubise, asparagus, pancetta, button onions and baby potatoes. Battered haddock, frites, tartare sauce and minted mushy peas is popular, a sign of the times and improving taste in eating. Salmon, crab and chorizo fishcakes, roasted sweetcorn with cherry tomato salsa is worth trying too. For hearty eaters there are rib eye and fillet steaks or blackened cod fillet with egg noodles, pak choi, mango and chilli salsa.

A wide range of supporting dishes includes carrot, cumin, orange and chilli salad, and cabbage, leeks and peas. For desserts choose between an apple, blackcurrant crumble and vanilla custard and, sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream. There is also a selection of cheeses to set the buffs alight.

Set in the idyllic village of Coulsdon, on the outskirts of London, The Ramblers Rest is a delightful country pub offering a modern British menu with Mediterranean influences. Just south of Croydon and Sutton, and easily accessible from the A23, the Ramblers Rest is a striking Tudor building, with a pretty garden, in a superb location close to Chipstead Rail Station.

Beautifully refurbished, the pub neatly balances contemporary chic with traditional, rustic décor and pulls it off by combining a wood beamed ceiling, exposed brick walls and a stone floor with plush leather sofas, banquettes and colourful silk cushions that invite guests to relax and unwind.

The á la carte menu offers sharing plates of antipasti - dolcelatte, Italian meats, marinated vegetables and warm stone-baked flatbreads or individual starters of smoked salmon with citrus ponzo dressing and fennel and herb salad; crispy fried pumpkin ravioli with parmesan and tomato salsa or winter bruschetta with asparagus, gorgonzola, prosciutto, balsamic onions and stirata Romana bread.

The pizza selection goes beyond the usual suspects with innovative topping selections such as the gamberetti which combines tiger prawn and char grilled courgette with chilli, tomato and gremolata, or and calzone with pork cacciatore. Tempting pasta dishes include chorizo and crab linguine, smoked haddock macaroni, and slow roasted pork lasagna. Likewise, salad of crispy duck with mooli, carrots, hoisin and plum sauce or chicken with avocado, melon, pomegranate, feta, cilantro and lime aioli pleasantly surprises with its singular mix of ingredients.

The attention to detail is also applied to longstanding pub favourites in the form of black and blue burger with dolcelatte, mushrooms and frites; braised short rib of beef with Lea and Perrins glaze, bubble and squeak and crispy fried onions; and rib eye steak with horseradish, parsley butter and frites. Steak and Wine Supper Wednesdays take it to another level with superb steaks and a bottle of red wine at half the price, while for those seafood fans there can be nothing better than Fish Fridays with a range of fresh specials and white wine at a very tempting 50% discount.

For a quick lunch or early dinner, a prix fixe menu offers one and two courses. For that special occasion with family and friend, The Rambler's Rest offers facilities for group dining with a menu tailor made for the event.

Dessert of apple and blackcurrant crumble with vanilla custard, sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream, a choux bun with fresh cream, espresso and chocolate sauce or white chocolate crème brûlée brings the satisfying meal to an end.

The wine list includes a variety of Mediterranean whites and reds with examples from Spain, Italy and France as well as singular varieties from the rest of the world. There's an excellent choice of cask ales that can include Sharps Doombar, Fullers London Pride and St Austell Tribute as well as chilled lagers, bottled beers and an unexpectedly comprehensive cocktail list to dispel any lingering, out-dated notions that country pubs are peopled by hicks in the sticks.

Liked it at The Rambler's Rest? Try one of its sister pubs close by including The Arkle Manor in Betchworth, The Derby Arms in Epsom and The White Hart in Brasted.

Close to the river on the Eton side of Windsor Bridge, Gilbey's Bar & Restaurant is located between the historic buildings of Eton College and Windsor Castle. The light and airy restaurant and conservatory lead on to a picturesque courtyard garden - a haven of tranquillity for summer dining, yet only a stone's throw from the bustle and excitement of nearby Windsor. This site has now been run continuously by the Gilbey family since 1975. The extensive refurbishment in 2010 saw the addition of a superb Studio Guest Accommodation Suite with rooftop views to Windsor Castle.

They are now spreading their buying net for their wine list much wider by enlisting the help of Tom Gilbey (Bill and Caroline's son), who after fourteen years in the wine trade, has started his own very dynamic wine company - The Vintner. The list changes frequently with exciting new additions from around the world as well as the French classics.

The Modern British 'a la carte' menu, with its emphasis on seasonal ingredients, has been designed by Head Chef Amaury de Oliveira and his talented team. There's a choice of at least seven starters prime among which would be the seared scallops, crab and lemon tian with carpaccio of smoked tuna and fennel chiffonade, or chicken liver parfait with curried chicory chutney, toasted walnut and raisin bread.

The affair with fresh and seasonal ingredients continues with the main courses, resulting in such delicious fare as roast Barbary duck breast with butternut and potato gratin, cavolo nero and candied orange; 7oz sirloin steak with green peppercorn sauce, chips and rocket, and tomato fondue tarte tatin with crème fraîche and basil mousse and melted gorgonzola.

The dessert list is very appealing, featuring such delectable confections as a lemon tart with vanilla ice cream, or dark chocolate truffle marquise with spiced mango compote and coconut sorbet. If you find more savoury delights tempting, there is a selection of British cheeses served with celery, chutney and biscuits.

In addition to this, there is an excellent value Set Menu available from Monday-Saturday lunchtime and Sunday-Thursday evening from 6.00pm. On Friday and Saturday evenings it is available between 6.00 - 7.00pm. This menu is ideal for a quick bite before a visit to Windsor Theatre, concerts at Eton College or St George's Chapel Windsor Castle and the races at Windsor Racecourse.

Afternoon tea is available in the weekends between 3.30pm - 5.30pm on Saturday, and on Sundays at 4pm - 6pm. For those who prefer something savoury there is also their afternoon 'grazing' menu.

Do click on their Website, which always features the up to date menus and pictures of the restaurant and private dining room.

This is also a wonderful venue for private parties both large and small. The upstairs private dining room, which seats a maximum of sixteen, is perfect for both private and corporate entertaining as well as intimate reception parties. The friendly and helpful staff have a great reputation for their caring and organisational skills.

A cool contemporary Italian restaurant and venue with brown, red, and cream colour scheme, lots of exposed brickwork and sleek leather sofas in the bar area for drinks, lounging or coffee. Al Duomo is next door to the Royal Pavilion and close to the main shops, hotels, theatre and Dome complex.

The restaurant-venue is open all day is spread over five floors, and with a variety of separate eating and drinking areas, is ideal for both couples and groups. Here's an enterprising idea. Sally and Tony Cole decided it made no sense at all for the ten companies on a business park in Reading to each have its own café, and acquired the only empty unit, fortuitously in a waterfront setting surrounded by a 180 acre green and pleasant landscape, before converting it into a 65 seat restaurant/brasserie.

With minimalist style décor, two chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants and a lot of chutzpah they were off. Having won the Reading Restaurant of the Year Award 2007-2008, shortlisted 5 years for National Restaurant of the Year and holder of the Top Table Golden Award, voted for by diners, and being recommended two years running by Michelin, you should not be disappointed.

Whilst there is significant customer support from the Business Park, the influx in the evenings brings a lively blend of light and shade, given trouble-free parking and easy access off the M4. With dishes like traditional Thai fish cakes with sweet chilli sauce, potted duo of fresh and smoked salmon with crème fraiche, pernod, lemon juice and chives, ox cheek spring roll with cauliflower puree and chilli jam, the evening is off to a good start.

Main courses pursue a happy path of inventiveness tinged with tradition and the red curry of seafood, an aromatic cream curry with scallops, salmon, pollock and prawns, venison Wellington accompanied by haggis, horseradish cream and red wine sauce, or a crispy potato scallop with curried puy lentils, tomato and spinach and riata are all dishes that please many. For an indulgent concession to modern food do take a tilt at the Wagyu beef burger.

The roasted monkfish comes to table wrapped in prosciutto with Yorkshire pudding, cider, chorizo and caper sauce. Isle of Wight lamb two ways, the roasted rump of lamb and wontons of braised shoulder of lamb stages an appearance with lemongrass and ginger. If you are a touch bored with traditionally prepared chicken try the corn fed free range Dorset chicken breast with massaman curried mousse filling, parsnip chips and creamed spinach.

A range of sweet temptations lies in wait to trap the weak and enthusiastic, with a classic lemon tart, sticky toffee pudding with pecan toffee sauce and Chantilly cream and a local cheese board that seems to have made a point of selecting the most outstanding of its kind, all stating the case for a menu that has not just had some puddings added on.

LSQ2's express lunch menu operates daily from 12 to 6 pm, offering exceptional value from a two option menu with dishes such as chicken liver parfait with toasted bread, and Hampshire pork sausages with mash and onion gravy. Hawkers Corner lists five attractive Asian dishes, of which nasi-goreng Indonesian style fried rice with mixed satay, fried egg and prawn crackers could be one.

A short, smart wine list presses the right buttons. From an Italian Chianti Reserva Villa Di Campobello 2006 to an Australian Howard Park Leston Cabernet Sauvignon 2009. Rich and opulent but brooding in its youth, the list follows in the footsteps of the LSQ2 interpretation of exciting food in great surroundings and company.

With the Madejski Stadium only a couple of good long kicks away and easy access, LSQ2 could easily become habitual. LSQ2 could easily become habitual. In any case you'll want to know more and one click will take you to their Website.

The Inn On The Lake has been a part of Godalming life since the 1930s. Initially a family run hotel, it has seen many changes over the years and has metamorphosed into a stylish country and dining pub. This has given it a contemporary feel and has brightened things up while retaining its focus on great food, warm service and a wonderful atmosphere.

The Inn now boasts a large but cosy bar area where you can feel at home on the comfy leather couches around several original open fire places. It serves a range of European lagers and real ales as well as a diverse wine list that will suit all tastes. No matter what your preference is, you should enjoy the warm welcome served with every round.

The wine list also offers a great range of champagnes to suit all tastes and pockets making it a great place for a celebration, birthday or anniversary. Treat yourself to a glass of bubbly to begin a wonderful evening there. The comfortable dining area has natural colour and luxurious furniture giving it an 'at home feel'. The décor is surpassed only by the menu.

To set the right note of fashionable sociability there are sharing plates, antipasti of cured meats, dolcelatte, roasted vegetables, parmesan, rocket, stuffed peppers, green chillies and baked flat bread, or Greek mezze of taramasalata with red pepper humus, tzatziki, feta and flatbreads. Amongst the starters, expect to find freshly made soup, sake cured salmon with wasabi crème fraîche and pickled ginger, or fennel with chilli crusted squid, pineapple and coriander salsa.

The salads offer pang pang chicken, Asian greens, satay, cashew nuts and cucumber, and for the seafood enthusiasts some prawn, avocado, spinach, watercress, crispy bacon and garlic dressing tends to please. These days no self-respecting gastropub can afford to be without its pizza range; look for a classic margherita of tomato, mozzarella, oregano and basil, the rustica with roasted vegetables, goats' cheese, tomatoes and rocket, or a Siciliana with Serrano ham, roast artichoke, olives and mozzarella. For the big event there are choices such as calves' liver with sweet potato, beetroot gratin and watercress or sea bass fillets with stuffed Romano peppers, caponata, pesto and baby new potatoes.

The classic burger, which has risen from the confines of fast food chains, carves a niche for itself on the menu and comes with gherkin, mustard mayo, cheese and frites. A wide range of supporting dishes include tomato, rocket and mozzarella, and cabbage, leeks and peas. Desserts are some of the best you'll encounter with apple and frangipane gallette and Cognac ice cream, and there is also a selection of local cheeses to set the buffs alight.

The gardens at the Inn On  The Lake are one of the building's best features, offering seating for up to 200 with 120 people able to eat there.

Take advantage of the tranquil setting overlooking the water to enjoy a summer lunch or make use of the well lit, heated patio area for an evening out. The Inn is open all day making it a great setting to while away a summer afternoon with a few drinks. If you have more time on your hands than that or have driven any distance to visit Godalming then why not stay a night or two. The Inn On The Lake provides a number of en-suite bedrooms where on the outskirts of the quiet village you can't help but leave feeling fully rested!

The Inn On The Lake has always been a beautiful building with elegant features like the fireplaces and the garden. However, the recent re-launch has hit on the perfect combination of quality food, quality people and great décor to create somewhere it's a real pleasure to spend time at; why not find out more on their Website? Windsor is one of England's most beautiful towns, steeped in history and located in a wonderful natural setting on the banks of the Thames. There is so much to do locally with great shops, wonderful museums, Windsor and Ascot racecourses, The Great Park and of course Windsor Castle, home to the Royal Family.

The only thing lacking was a flagship restaurant and bar that the residents could be proud of and in which visitors could indulge themselves. That was until Browns opened in May 2002.

Browns Windsor became a favoured location in less than two years. In the winter months the restaurant oozes warmth and charm as shoppers, tourists, business folk and Windsor's discerning residents utilise Browns as the ideal place to relax and meet friends and colleagues.

However, in the summer the restaurant really comes alive. Browns Windsor is the place to people watch and be seen, whether you are there to enjoy a meal on the balcony, or a long cocktail on the riverside decking.

The restaurant is located opposite the river ferry which takes people to the races at Windsor and Ascot, and makes Browns an ideal location for corporate entertaining and race-goers. Browns Windsor combines modern style with the high values of excellent service, quality food and drink that has made it the much loved restaurant it has grown to be.

Browns is a classic English restaurant with a menu that evolves rather than changes and there's always a dish to suit your taste. So typical starters might include pan seared scallops on a bed of pea and mascarpone purée with chorizo and chilli butter sauce or lobster and crab croquettes with a garlic cream leading on to main courses such as slow cooked shoulder of Welsh lamb in Rosemary and garlic jus with minted broad beans and peas, and sweet potato dauphinoise or grilled chicken breast topped with prosciutto and taleggio with basil oil, served with watercress and crisp seasoned fries.

A quick look at the dessert menu brings you to the conclusion that this is no place to skip on sweets, so indulge wholeheartedly in the apple, gooseberry and elderflower crumble with custard, profiteroles with warm chocolate sauce or the lemon and mandarin tart with clotted cream.

Browns offers a genuine value for money experience but also can cater for large parties with a more expansive budget. A full wine, cocktail and champagne list, with the champagnes being particularly famous for their sensible pricing, ensures that every occasion is well-blessed with joie de vivre.

With all the charm and attractiveness that comes with so many riverside pubs, this particular version has an added extra, called The Regatta. It seems that only if you display plenty of foresight, your chances of getting a worthwhile view - unless of course you are competing in which case you have a different set of problems - is to book very well in advance.

On days when it's storm force Force 9 blowing down the river, the place still has plenty to offer. A quick dash from the car to the door will admit you to a very different world, one of log fires and cocooned warmth. Talking of which, fire also features in the open kitchens and stone fired ovens, now very much a talking point.

To set the right note of fashionable sociability there are sharing plates, box baked Camembert with red onion jam and rustic bread and Greek mezze of taramasalata with red pepper hummus, tzatziki, feta and flatbreads.

Amongst the starters, there is freshly made soup, smoked mackerel pâté, seared pigeon breast, or a red onion tart. The salads - sorry, that should read 'leaves' - offer Persian chicken kebabs, fattoush salad, yoghurt and mint dressing, and for the seafood fiends some smoked trout, prawn, pancetta, horseradish dressing, watercress, spinach and baby potatoes.

These days no self-respecting gastropub can afford to be without its pizza range; expect to find a classic Margherita of tomato, mozzarella, oregano and basil, another with pepperoni, chorizo, tomato and jalapeños. Pastas include rigatoni, pork, veal and oregano meatballs with arrabiata sauce, and smoked haddock risotto.

The grills for hearty eaters are worth trying and choices include pork chops and salmon among others. These are all served with frites, garlic butter, brandy peppercorn sauce, béarnaise, burnt tomato and onion salsa or mango and chilli. For the big event there is always a fish of the day on request.

For the big event, there is always a fish of the day on request. The spit chicken with roast garlic, lemon, thyme, aioli and frites is worth trying too. The classic burger, which has risen from the confines of fast food chains, carves a niche for itself on the menu and comes with onion, gherkin, mustard mayo, cheese and bacon. For hearty eaters there is a five spice duck confit, or lamb rack with a spiced dukkah crust.

A wide range of supporting dishes includes Belgian frites and mayo, and cabbage, leeks and peas. Desserts are some of the best you'll encounter with apple and frangipane gallette and Cognac ice cream, and there is also a selection of local cheeses to set the buffs alight.

A well travelled wine list does the business well with a list that, whilst fairly modest covers most eventualities at prices that don't break the bank, and are described under such cost headings as 'vibrant and soft or luxurious and rich' - just like people.

For up to date information click on their well set out Website  - and don't forget to book for the Regatta. Please note that the E-Mail Contact is for enquiries only, not for bookings.

Whatever the purpose of your call at glo, winding down with colleagues after a brusque day or just enjoying the company of friends, here you will find an upbeat and romantic environment to set your evening in motion before dining in the chic restaurant.

The signature cocktails are the perfect way to go, perhaps starting with one of the six listed martinis, before going on to classic longs, sparklers or shooters. Driving? Then select from one of their four non-alcoholic varieties.

An international menu offers many interesting choices, and they recommend sharing food for maximum pleasure, although many do not wish to do this. Dim sum is a speciality so look out for pork and prawn siu mai, hoi sin duck, and scallop and shiitake mushroom dumplings amongst the steamed.

That old favourite duck spring roll leads off the crispy dim sum, cashew and prawn dumplings represent the new wave and vegetarian spring rolls are pure melt in the mouth. Starters include mushrooms with gorgonzola and coriander, Thai crab cakes and hoisin duck pancakes.

They also have an interesting selection of noodles, and pesto and coriander, Thai green and kung po are amongst them. Nowadays you seem to be never less than ten metres from a pizza, and glo is on the mark once again giving a new dimension to this much loved Italian invention, all served with a unique house tomato base and lightly sprinkled with Asian spices, the hoi sin duck or Thai spicy pepperoni are highly recommended.

The grills are equally spectacular with Thai BBQ ribs and whole poussin chicken, manuka rump steak, and pesto lemongrass chicken skewers. Whilst exploring your way through the dessert menu you might encounter a chocolate box, or ice cream money bags, hot and crisp on the outside with creamy Asian ice cream on the inside, topped with warm manuka honey.

The taste in wines is eclectic and not so large as to be thoroughly confusing. Several are by the glass and all under £20. glo stays open until 2am and as a refuge for the restless night hawks it could hardly be bettered. Their smart Website will tell you more. Only one thing left to say - enjoy! It is even open for breakfast from 9 am every day.

Think of Brighton, and English's springs to mind, particularly if seafood is your weakness; owned by the Leigh-Jones family since 1945, English's has established itself as one of the most famous seafood restaurants in the South of England. Established by the Braziers during the last century, the restaurant is set within three fishermen's cottages dating back 400 years with wonderful al fresco dining. The three series of murals painted in 1996 by two local art students, Catarina Perestrello and Mark Davies feature Edwardian dinner scenes in the Spode Room. The Wedgwood Room has after dinner pleasures, and the Minton commemorates the handbag scene from 'The Importance of Being Ernest', with none other than the author himself casting a sardonic eye over proceedings. The menu includes a comprehensive array of seafood dishes with a particular emphasis on local and sustainable produce.

Head Chef Gavin Lee started his career about 19 years ago at The Savoy in London, his interest in food started from a very young age, and he was lucky to be offered an apprenticeship in this premier London hotel at the age of 16. He has not looked back since. Gavin draws his inspiration from the creative process; the way a dish starts out in his head and culminates in a delicious meal. It's really about how the journey evolves along the way. Being a chef has also given him the opportunity to travel, having worked in some of the best kitchens in America and New Zealand amongst others.

Due to the seasonality of the products, the menu changes regularly to take advantage of the best that the markets have to offer. Ingredients are, whenever possible sourced locally and an ever increasing emphasis is put on sustainable sources both locally and further afield. Oysters are particularly popular, with a selection of rock oysters available all year round and a selection of native oysters available from September till the end of April. All the oysters come from well respected suppliers who take the utmost care and attention to ensure a superior product for the customer.

Great care and attention is taken in the selection of wines making the List. Bringing you a variety of wines with interesting back stories as well as great tone, character and taste. A good deal of time and effort has been spent sourcing, tasting and compiling a carefully chosen mix of wines, champagnes, dessert wines and half bottles which means it goes beyond the examples widely available on the High Street. The list is tweaked and refreshed on an on-going basis, whilst retaining many of the firm favourites. You also cannot fail to be impressed with the selection available by the glass, which offers variety and flexibility to your choice.

Whether you choose to sit 'sur le terroir', at the famous Oyster Bar or in one of the Edwardian plush dining rooms you will experience a traditional and expertly executed service which has all but disappeared in the modern wave of the branded restaurants. Whether it's due to the notable volumes of regular guests or the confidence and surety throughout this establishment, there is a genuine and relaxed friendliness in the air. The stereotypical pretentious nature synonymous with celebrated restaurants certainly does not exist here.

It's hard to say anything more about this restaurant so just go there, sit outside on a good day and enjoy superb seafood with the salty breeze off the Channel; or nestle into the plush red velvet and gold décor for an evening of unbridled pleasure.
