Built in 1714 in the days when Bishops expected to be accommodated in nothing less than a palace, Soughton has come down over the years as home to many famous and distinguished people.

It is a truly imposing building which must have made Archbishops wonder if they'd got it quite right. Surrounded by 150 acres of superb grounds, 15 minutes from the centre of Chester it is beautifully furnished and well deserves the appellation of luxury hotel.

There is nothing ancient about the approach to the cooking which is very up to date, well-presented and exceptionally good value. Since they have a wine shop within the complex it comes as no surprise to find that the list reflects a wide and mature attention to detail. House wine at £15.95.

This hugely popular gastropub has the space to cope with the crowds which obviously appreciate its good food and efficient approach. Perhaps the sweeping views from the windows are part of the attraction. Expect well-cooked and largely well-known dishes served with aplomb and good cheer.
