Why Harry's Bistro is known by that name remains a mystery but the history of the building is not a secret too dark to keep; housed in a remarkable mansion built in the 1880s, the site was also occupied by a monastery in the 13th century. The huge paintings on the walls make a bold design statement and guests marvel at the stunning views over the Menai Straits and Snowdonia as you settle in for a meal.

The kitchen relies on bountiful produce from Anglesey, carefully selecting ingredients and the skilfull reinterpretation of some seasonal Welsh classics. Starters of plaice goujons are teamed with pea and mangetout salad, while roasted duck breast and corn-fed chicken supreme reign in the main course section. Desserts like sticky toffee pudding and raspberry bakewell tart certainly don't lose touch with tradition.

There's equal footing in the extensive and affordable wine list at Harry's Bistro featuring both Old and New World players.

It's a pub, a brasserie and a restaurant - oh yes, and it has rooms. The dining room offers a good range of well-tried dishes, involving locally sourced ingredients as in game and seafood. The brasserie has a few major dishes but in the main goes for pasta, salads and sandwiches. Each has their own wine list - the brasserie's is short and workmanlike, the restaurant is much more all-embracing, with a good range of half bottles. A very drinkable selection of house wines come in at £14.25.
