Formerly the home of Lord Swansea, Caer Beris Manor has been tastefully converted into a country house hotel with an emphasis on the traditional. The historic panelled restaurant has all the ambience of a private dining room and serves a menu which depends very much on local ingredients and produce. A four course a la carte does justice to such delicacies as Welsh Black beef and lamb. The sea is not far away and its delicacies, such as Pembrokeshire sea trout are well exploited. Welsh cheeses, those little known but delightful additions to the British cheeseboard are kept well, with good variety. Wine is taken seriously at Caer Beris and over 150 bins from twelve or so different countries are for your consideration. House wine at £10.95.

A cosy little restaurant, with a charming and welcoming setting, Roberto's Restaurant is equally popular amongst locals and regular town visitors who love authentic Italian cuisine. Using vibrant colours in the décor, the restaurant has a lively vibe with a creeper clad ceiling, a black board menu and patio seating adding to the ambiance.

While executing regional recipes from Italy, Roberto's Ristorante presents a good variety of appetizers. These include deep fried traditional coated mushrooms and a lightly battered assortment of prawns, calamari, whitebait and monkfish served with homemade garlic mayonnaise. Don't wait for pizzas amongst other courses, rather a range of pastas, fish fillets and classic meat dishes from the Italian cuisine. Expect to find vegetarian options thrown in for good measure on the menu.

Crème brûlée with a hint of white chocolate and fresh raspberries and the creamy rice pudding topped with toasted coconut and laced with apricot coulis deserve a special mention.

The Griffin Inn

A479, Llyswen, LD3 0UR [Map]

A real fisherman's hideaway in promising country, The Griffin Inn provides all that the roaming angler could need, whilst keeping faith with the local community, amongst whom can be numbered the Vicar, though he is probably fishing for a different kind of catch to the anglers. Learn more

A real fisherman's hideaway in promising country, The Griffin Inn provides all that the roaming angler could need, whilst keeping faith with the local community, amongst whom can be numbered the Vicar, though he is probably fishing for a different kind of catch to the anglers. The place is full of old world charm of the structural variety too, the exterior clad in creeper. The menu changes daily and you can eat in the bar or the restaurant depending on your mood. Local produces features strongly and fish of the maritime variety comes hotfoot from Cornwall. Game in season features well and other dishes owe their origin to local producers. A sensible wine list takes in Europe and the New World, and for those with a good thirst the cellar contains some well-bred beers, with guest appearances.

This bed and breakfast accommodation is a Visit Wales 5 star guest house near Newtown, offering luxury en-suite rooms and a licensed restaurant. Situated in the North of Powys, in the ancient county of Montgomeryshire, this venue can serve as the ideal base for a trip to Powis Castle with its famous gardens and for exploring Mid Wales and the Welsh Marches. Nestling in the hills above Newtown, the views stretch for miles over the Severn Vale to the Berwyns in the North. There are log fires, a cosy sitting room and a restaurant perfect for a leisurely breakfast and candlelit dinners.

Welsh wizardry invades the cuisine in the best possible way and Cornish scallops use Newadd Fach bacon to offset their charms. The Bryn Derw chicken with leeks and white wine Dauphinoise potatoes brings a good touch of credibility to this much maligned in recent times bird, and grapes in muscat jelly prelude some fine organic Welsh farmhouse cheeses.

The Dragon restaurant was once the heart of a bustling coaching inn, with its many exposed timbers, ancient fireplace created from a bread oven and a pane of glass said to have been signed by the hangman at the last public hanging in the Market Square just in front of the hotel. They particularly pride themselves on the use of fresh local produce, with fruit and vegetables from Offa veg and their meat from the local award winning butcher Langfords. Dishes could run from a terrine of chicken livers and green peppercorns with red onion chutney and cherry tomato salad to begin with to mains of local beef fillet with Bearnaise sauce; Thai shrimp curry or wild mushroom and truffle pasta served with a bowl of mixed salad. This is accompanied by a wide ranging wine list, with sensible mark-ups.

An exterior inspection of The Felin Fach Griffin reveals a gaunt building that has done service as country pub and hill farm; but once inside pause to admire the stylish conversion that has cleverly retained the original plot, providing the setting for some excellent 2 AA Rosette cooking, and comfort overall.

There is a leaning towards local and organic produce and increasingly from the kitchen garden, resulting in dishes of impressive authenticity. The Griffin harbours a refreshing tendency to regard lunch as just as important a meal as supper and the value for money throughout is remarkable. Starters include a delicious cream of leek and potato soup, followed by a grain-fed rib-eye of beef.

A plate of wild venison with butternut squash with roasted carrots and elderberries on the side is comfort food personified, so is a wild halibut fillet, with young summer vegetables and lemon butter as a partner. Sunday lunch is a well celebrated event, with a rib of local Welsh beef from Paddy Sweeney, the local butcher, as the centrepiece.
