Belushi's - Newquay

35 Fore Street, Newquay, TR7 1HR [Map]

Belushi's believe in living life king size, whether it's their huge drink offers or the massive parties that they host. So stop by at the trendy Fulham venue, relax by the sea at Brighton, or head to Greenwich, the unstoppable East End, or any other outlet, you're assured of an all American bar and restaurant experience and like many of its rivals Belushi's certainly know a thing or two about partying. No doubt their discount deals are a major draw, but having said that it's important not to overlook the food, and being thoroughly American, burgers are a speciality with typically generous portions. Think big, think Aussie works burger, or choose from some inventive toppings like Cajun, mushroom blue, the BBQ bacon or satay. A closer look at main courses could reveal chilli con carne, sausage and mash, fish and chips and sirloin steak, in addition to fresh salads and sandwiches. Haute cuisine it's not, but for well prepared and well priced classics, it's hard to beat.

Restaurant at Corisande Manor Hotel

The inner man is by no means neglected at this atmospheric paradise. A view is taken that the gourmet is ill-served in Cornwall and stringent efforts are made to reverse this perceived state of affairs. Virtually every item of prepared food is made within the hotel and local ingredients are invoked wherever possible and available. Dinner is a four course event starting with soup, chosen from amongst carrot and coriander, nettle, fish or chicken and almond to name but a few.

A choice from two starters is then offered, say kipper pate or crab parcels. Main courses field two, of which one is normally fish. This may be red mullet with a chive sauce and pork fillet in a cider sauce. Puddings come in threes, with a cheese board option and could include bread and butter pudding, mascarpone tart or pear ice cream (their own, of course).

The wine list is the work of a master and includes such novelties as a 1915 Madeira and some wonderful French vintages, and has won prestige awards. I would go so far as to say that it is worth going to Corisande for the wine list alone.

Crashing waves break on to the gleaming sands of the North Cornwall Coast and the entire scene is one of picturesque splendour, especially when viewed from the Windward Hotel in Newquay. Luxurious bedrooms offer some stunning sea views while the restaurant which looks out over the beach at Porth provides sustenance for all appetites. Whether you indulge in cream teas on the terrace or sit down for a proper meal in the restaurant, the experience is comforting and inviting with the attentive service and delicious food being largely held responsible for this feeling of well being.

The cuisine at the restaurant is international offering dishes such as pan fried king scallops wrapped in Parma ham and drizzled with chive oil, followed by fillet of bass with a runner bean stew and roasted vine tomatoes. A selection of delectable desserts brings the meal to a fitting end although the Cornish cheese platter is also a good alternative. The global wine list offers a variety of choices that complement your meal expertly.
