Restaurant at The Lugger Hotel

Voted by The Sunday Times as the best new seaside hotel is not such a bad way to start out on a new venture. Run by Richard Young, formerly general manager of Olga Polizzi's Tresanton Hotel in St Mawes, and his wife Sheryl, the Lugger in many ways is representative of the new Cornwall, with its burgeoning prosperity based on fresh attractions such as the Eden Project.

Restaurant at The New Inn

We arrived at a lunchtime in September, exhausted and soaked after just under three hours on the flat-bottomed ferry ship that serves the islands, on the tail end of a hurricane not normally our preferred method of travel, but the helicopters were grounded.

Located in a pretty, well-protected little harbour, the Rising Sun is presided over by the West Country's only female Master Chef, Ann Long. Perhaps in these politically correct days this is a matter of no concern but what she produces most certainly is.

Imagine all the familiar delights without the responsibility and the drudgery of having to run it - if that is your idea of fun, particularly if you have small children, then you should check out what The Rosevine Hotel at Portscatho provides for its guests Set in two acres, the predominantly Georgian building houses twelve suites complete with dining and kitchen facilities, including private terraces, most of which overlook Gerran's Bay.
