Shipwrights Arms
Helston Village, Helston, TR12 6JX [Map]
A carefully preserved village pub, where the owners, the Herberts, have had the wit to realise that you don't change what is not broken, thereby laying claim to what must be one of the most perfect pubs in the country.
Thatched roofs, interesting interiors paying due homage to the passing river and a summer barbecue that operates outside except in the most desperate conditions, a good mix of boaties, locals and others all mingling comfortably together.
The menu is subject to the whims of the host who can be relied upon to come up with something that pleases from a repertoire that embraces Thai, Indian or Spanish This can include lobster, crab, steaks, fresh monkfish marinated in lime, chilli, garlic and coriander, well supported by 40 or so wines, all at prices that will bring a smile to your face.
Afterwards cross the water by ferry and visit one of Cornwall's finest gardens, Trebah. To say it is in the top 80 UK gardens is a gross understatement in my view.

Restaurant at The Rising Sun
St Mawes, Truro, TR2 5DJ [Map]
Located in a pretty, well-protected little harbour, the Rising Sun is presided over by the West Country's only female Master Chef, Ann Long. Perhaps in these politically correct days this is a matter of no concern but what she produces most certainly is.
This is a place where one can eat well, secure in the knowledge that you will be given value for money. A sensible choice of beautifully prepared and presented food, supported by a wine list which is down-to-earth and perfectly adequate. House wines start at £10.

Dining at The Mill House Inn
Trebarwith, nr Tintagel, PL34 0HD [Map]
Located in deep valleys that deliver their waters to the surrounding seas, the coasts of Devon and Cornwall are well blessed with delightful old water mills that did the business for farmers and miners in earlier days.
This one was a corn mill, so now instead of providing the basic ingredient it is occupied with serving the completed product, which it does in considerable style. Best use has been made of the surrounding terrain, with split level terraces, and the inn now has nine elegant bedrooms with a lot of fittings that would have had previous millers rather mystified.
Dishes draw heavily on the surrounding richness of produce, and starters could include seafood tagliatelle, Cornish field mushrooms, or a delightful smoked mackerel pate lightly flavoured with horseradish. Moving on to the main delights expect to find fillet of Cornish hake served with a Port Isaac crab sauce, Michaelstow beef in various manifestations, or local haddock on a prawn risotto with lemon parsley oil.
The rod is not spared and a list of homemade traditional and contemporary desserts, and a selection of local cheese that may activate tastebuds you never thought you possessed, all go to help make meals here a pleasantly memorable experience. On 23 July 2006 in the Sunday Observer, it was noted that the Mill House Inn was one of the top five places to eat in Cornwall.

Cormorant Restaurant
The Cormorant Hotel, Golant, PL23 1LL [Map]
The team of chefs headed by Martin Adams take every advantage of the best that Cornwall produces in the way of fish, meat, game and cheeses. A typical set menu could start with a warm salad of quail with scotched quail's egg and white truffle mayonnaise, followed by monkfish wrapped in Parma ham with shrimp butter. Desserts are typically tempting with an assiette of citrus with lemon posset, caramelised pink grapefruit tart, lime jelly and blood orange sorbet.
The extensive wine list earned them the Conde Nast Johansens 2008 Award for 'Best Wine List' in the UK and Ireland in the Small Hotels and Restaurants category. The Cormorant is a place for all seasons and their special breaks programme reflects this.
