Driftwood Restaurant
Driftwood Hotel, Rosevine, Portscatho, TR2 5EW [Map]
When Cornwall goes romantic it does not do it by half measures. Driftwood is a place for romance, reflection and rest ably assisted by the Cornish climate, sweeping sands, modern comforts and, of course, a restaurant with views. The daily changing menu treads well the delicate path between local custom and those who come from further afield. Amongst the starters are such quirky dishes as chicken baked in hay, with celery soup and coco beans, a tian of pan-fried skate wings, shredded crab with tomato and avocado, or roast foie gras with beetroot, walnuts and a crisp ginger and port jus.
Amongst the mains, the more conventional will focus on such dishes as rack of pork, a lasagne of braised pork belly with butternut squash and a chilli and apple reduction, or more adventurously the fricassee of pigs' trotters with butter beans and more. Given notice superbly fresh lobster and fruit de mer can be yours.
Puddings embrace a Creole banana brulee with rum and raisin ice cream, or a rhubarb mousse with ginger savarin and orange sauce. Service is entirely positive.

Ratho Wine Bar & Restaurant
21 Church Street, Falmouth, TR11 3EG [Map]
Lovers of good wine and food, from holidaymakers to locals, are attracted to the inviting Ratho Wine Bar and Restaurant, tucked away above the Falmouth Bookseller. Brothers Aly and Ru Cameron have restored the beautiful period dining room, circa 1820, to its former glory. Get away from the crowds with a glass of wine and your new book or pop in for a meal before you visit the theatre.
A full-fledged drinks list is available providing much pleasure with carefully selected bins that range from good house wines all the way up to beer, spirits, and Krug vintage champagne.
On offer is a lovely range of modern British food, all created from quality Cornish produce. Starters of half-roast poussin, fondant potato, pancetta, and tarragon butter, or seared pigeon breasts and duck livers tick all the boxes. A short but tempting choice of mains has baked brill fillets, chive mash, tiger prawns, spinach, and parsley sauce; rump of beef with oxtail pie, and spiced vegetable fritters, garlic lentils, tomatoes, and coriander sauce. The two-chocolate bavarois with orange sorbet can only be ignored with the greatest difficulty - why bother?

Porthgwidden Cafe
Porthgwidden Beach, The Island, St Ives, TR26 1PL [Map]
A favourite with surfers, holidaymakers, anybody who wants a relatively quiet beach with a great bite to eat and refreshment at hand. This little secluded sister of the well known Porthminster Beach Cafe, Porthgwidden is a real treat for anyone who wants to escape the St Ives hustle and bustle, with quality service and food, all located in a little bit of St Ives that commands awesome uninterrupted views towards Godrivey lighthouse. A notably Moroccan feel sets the tone, the rest comes from the wall to wall sunshine and the cheerful informality of the place.
Ryan Venning and Tamara Schallhorn are the two leading the Cafe, where Ryan is putting his all into creating simple, affordable dishes with a stamp of class, Tamara's personality and warmness shines through. Lunch is somewhat eclectic and ranges across various cuisines, but the food is approachable on all levels from a simple 100% Cornish burger or local haddock in the fish and chips to a crispy fried squid with citrus miso dressing and crispy shallots.
A specials blackboard takes particular advantage of the local fish, whilst many herbs and vegetables are sourced directly from Porthminster Beach Cafe's garden on the other side of the harbour.
At the end try their freshly cooked waffle with a selection of toppings, a great favourite of the house, then shut your eyes, listen to the surf and think of the Caribbean. A small but attractive wine list meets most eventualities and there is Mexican, Spanish and Portuguese beer in the icebox.

Glendorgal Resort, Lusty Glaze Road, Porth, nr Newquay, TR7 3AD [Map]

In the unlikely event that you lack an appetite, venture down the stone steps cut into the cliff, letting your imagination run riot as you go, to the sandy strand. If that doesn't do it the return journey will.
Fresh local fish features prominently on the menu and include dishes such as winter fish stew with squid, cockles, monkfish and mussels and a duo of salmon and sole with dill mashed potatoes and citrus butter.
