Dining at The Pandora Inn

Restronguet Creek, Mylor Bridge, Falmouth, TR11 5ST [Map]

This is the sort of pub that has been blitzed out of existence in so many places, surviving only in the memories of previous generations. This is the sort of pub that has been blitzed out of existence in so many places, surviving only in the memories of previous generations. But at Mylor Bridge it lives on, with panelled walls, low wooden ceilings, a thatched roof, snug corners and a waterfront location for those seeking an encounter with tradition. Downstairs are the bars and informal eating, with an upstairs dining room for those seeking a little more formality.

A floating pontoon makes a useful extension of space when conditions are right. The menu is hardly sophisticated, much more tasty gastropub grub of a high order, with such regular favourites as crab cakes, crab thermidor, Mylor Bridge sausages, a gutsy Mediterranean fish stew, and many blackboard specials such as beef stroganoff, lasagne, cod in beer batter, sea bass fillets and breast of Barbary duck. The comings and goings of the yachties, often via the pontoon, lend a certain 'coaching minus the horses' element to proceedings that in turn ensures standards are kept high.

On the best of English days it is possible to imagine that you are sitting on the terrace in Jamaica, or Bermuda even, for here is yet another of these Cornish wonders with views that are breathtaking and superlative-draining. Your problem here is to penetrate the determined phalanx of residents, who naturally have priority for tables, but you can be lucky and a call in advance is not a bad idea. The menu, which changes daily, is a miracle of never-ending contrasts as you are taken from one part of the globe to another, but such is the choice you are unlikely to have your hopes dashed. That stern critic of the eager hotelier, Paddy Burt, writing in the DT, suggests that after a protracted search she found what she sought here at Tregildry, and it extended well into the dining room. A glittering galaxy of Awards supports her opinion. A nifty wine list, as well travelled as the menu, with house wine at £11.75.

La Bouche Creole

Dockacre Road, Launceston, PL15 8YY [Map]

It is said that one can enjoy Creole cuisine only if you have 'la bouche Creole', the mouth of Creole. However, it is well recognized now that people from all over the world enjoy these dishes, la bouche or not, and in Cornwall it is best savoured at this small, well designed bistro, featuring the hearty no-nonsense taste of Louisana's traditional dishes prepared using fresh Cornish produce. The seafood thermidor is absolutely superb with all the individual flavours of crab, monkfish, scallops and prawns enhanced by the delicious sauce.  Meat options include confit of free range duck with white beans, tomato and chorizo and braised pork Orleans with garlic and spring onion mash and cider. Desserts are equally good with options such as white chocolate bread pudding with whiskey sauce and bourbon pannacotta with a cinnamon and rum spiced mango compote.

Restaurant at Treglos Hotel

Like so many places in Cornwall people come here for the sea-views alone, and they keep on coming year after year. Cornwall seems to breed that kind of loyalty. The restaurant offers uncomplicated food, reliable and generous from a menu that changes, but not too much. Learn more

Like so many places in Cornwall people come here for the sea-views alone, and they keep on coming year after year. Cornwall seems to breed that kind of loyalty. The restaurant offers uncomplicated food, reliable and generous from a menu that changes, but not too much. The utterly fresh fish for which Cornwall is justly celebrated features largely, but not to the exclusion of a wider approach. Adequate wine list with house wine at £10.70.

Tucked away down a country lane in the Looe valley, this intimate country hotel with an internationally acclaimed restaurant is a little gem. Built in 1894 by a tea merchant returned from India, the location could not be more perfect, with breathtaking views across the valley.

The restaurant serves modern British food from locally sourced ingredients. Fruit, vegetables and herbs are all grown on site and used whenever possible by Head Chef Tom Hunter and his team. You can expect a seasonal menu including dishes such as red mullet with saffron risotto and West Country duck breast with spiced red cabbage and grain mustard potato. The restaurant has just been awarded 3 AA Rosettes for the twentieth consecutive year.

The wine list is extensive and comfortably priced. House wines from Chile and France are £13.50 a bottle, or a reasonable £3.25 a glass.
