Set on the edge of Dartmoor, as the name suggests, this solidly reassuring and attractive country house includes an excellent restaurant amongst its many charms. Start with the avocado with locally air-dried ham and garnished with dressed apple, celery and walnuts.

Particularly attractive to the offal eaters could be the sauté of calve's liver with a Devon Blue rarebit accompanied by shallots and bacon. Portion size is generous, service is not over-hyped so everybody is happy and the evidence of a good proportion of regular clientele speaks for itself. House wine starts at £8.45.
