Anchor Inn, The

Plenty of homemade cooking at this 450 year old smuggler's haunt, as well as superb seafood straight from its source. The list of Awards assembled over the years is just about as long as the menu and that, believe me, is saying something.

  • Address: Cockwood, nr Starcross, Exeter, EX6 8RA (Map)

  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: N/A, Dinner: £15.00

ASK - Exeter

For some time I made the mistake of thinking that no group of restaurants in the region of 200 locations could hope to maintain the quality for which I was looking. Then one day I decided to put my prejudices to the test, walked into Oxford Ask! and discovered that I could not have been more mistaken.

  • Address: 5 Cathedral Close, Exeter, EX1 1EZ (Map)
  • Cuisine(s): Pizza & Pasta
  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: N/A, Dinner: £22.00

Cafe Paradiso at Alias Hotel Barcelona

A splendidly funky place, part of a larger complex and built with a big-top design in mind. Combine this with a mass of weird and wonderful objets d'art, fill it with lots of cheerful people enjoying a blend of café and brasserie style food and you have a compelling recipe for enjoyment and good vibes.

  • Address: Magdalen Street, Exeter, EX2 4HY (Map)
  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: £22.00, Dinner: £40.00

Cafe Rouge - Exeter

Café Rouge has around one hundred branches throughout Britain all offering a wide range of dishes drawn from the French cuisine. Slightly less than half their branches are in or close to London. Almost inevitably the décor and design of each restaurant differs from the others, but there is a general curtsy towards La France.

  • Address: 24 Bedford Street, Exeter, EX1 1LL (Map)
  • Cuisine(s): French
  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: £21.00, Dinner: £26.00

Cat in the Hat

Opened in 2002, by Shayne and Louise Bowers, Cat in the Hat restaurant has always had a reputation for providing good quality food and wine, combined with friendly and helpful service. Now it is owned and run by Phil Picton, Shirley Hughes, and Wendy Watson, who have retained the same high standards of hospitality, with a focus on fine dining, Westcountry produce, and excellent wines.

Conservatory, The

Discover the joys of dining in this small but perfectly formed, family run restaurant in Central Exeter. The chefs carefully prepare diver caught scallops, West Country fillet steak, rack of lamb, woodpigeon and cheeses all sourced from Devon.

  • Address: 18 North Street, Exeter, EX4 3QS (Map)

Double Locks Pub

Famed for the beauty of its canal-side setting, the Double Locks also offers an imposing range of real ales, kicking off with Old Bastard and other much-revered relations such as Budvar and Beamish Black.

  • Address: Canal Banks, Alphington, Exeter, EX2 6LT (Map)
  • Cuisine(s): European
  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: N/A, Dinner: £22.00

Galley Fish Restaurant, The

Chef/owner Paul Da-Costa-Greaves, a Master Chef of Great Britain, and Mark Wright have created an interesting variation on the 'restaurant with rooms' theme (here they are referred to as 'cabins'), in this idyllic spot.

  • Address: 41 Fore Street, Topsham, Exeter, EX3 0HU (Map)
  • Cuisine(s): Seafood
  • Avg. Cost Per Head Lunch: £25.00, Dinner: £52.00

Giraffe - Exeter

When you enter a chain restaurant there is always a sense of déjà vu, yet with the twelve outlets of Giraffe, this may not really be true. Russel and Juliette Joffe and Andrew Jacobs' philosophy behind this group of restaurants is sustaining the driving force of healthy, happy eating, while retaining the difference each location brings.

  • Address: Princesshay, Exeter, EX1 1AB (Map)
  • Cuisine(s): International
