Restaurant at The Rock Inn
Haytor Vale, Dartmoor National Park, Newton Abbot, TQ13 9XP [Map]
A delightful old coaching inn, going back to the 18th century, which takes its food seriously whilst still managing to retain its position as the 'local'. Whilst the food may be described as classic there is nothing pedestrian about the finished product, using local ingredients in particular. A terrine of pork and prune with a salad and truffle oil sets the tone, followed by pan-fried red bream on basil mash with beurre blanc. To finish, the pecan nut tart with clotted cream followed by excellent coffee. The wine list is well-travelled and with house wine at £9.95 everyone is happy.
