Restaurant at Glazebrook House Hotel

South Brent, South Brent , TQ10 9JE [Map]

Another of those fine Victorian houses with which Dartmoor seems to be ringed. Were they all built by disillusioned Governors of the prison who sought to escape from the misty wildness of that stone monument to man's inhumanity? Glazebrook is much too friendly for that sort of association but if a passing traveller, be he Governor or not, call in today he can be assured of a worthy meal, with local ingredients employed and transformed into dishes of Anglo-French origin gently overlaid with modern skills. While still wearing the mantle of a traditional pub, The Royal Oak in the village of South Brent, post refurbishment, has transformed into a charming gastropub serving real ales, modern British and European food as well as lighter bites and snacks by the bar. The chef prides himself on using only local and fresh produce while seasonal elements hold sway over the menu, which changes every six weeks to reflect availability.

Typical starters might include scallop, black pudding and Parma ham parcels, with pea puree and tomato dressing followed by wild boar sausages, red onions, mash potatoes, mushrooms and red wine jus. For dessert, a little indulgence in the baked lemon tart with raspberry sorbet and orange and blossom honey tuille should make a pleasant diversion. Sample the chicken and chorizo, marinated in lemon and garlic at the bar while you sip on some of their beers and ales or maybe a glass of wine from their extensive list.
