The Cricket Inn
Beesands, Kingsbridge, TQ7 2EN [Map]
The small fishing village of Beesands, nestled in the South Hams countryside, is home to The Cricket Inn, first opened in 1867. This is where locals and visitors alike can gather in a spirit of conviviality for an enjoyable evening dining from a predominantly seafood menu.
Using local fresh fish, seafood and reared meats, The Cricket Inn offers guests traditional comfort fare as well as more gourmet dishes. This can include smoked mackerel pâté, pan seared scallops with Parma ham, whole plaice with beurre noisette, Devonshire sirloin and Barbary duck breast as well as beer battered cod with chips and fish pie topped with mashed potato and cheese. Pan fried John Dory fillets with saffron beurre blanc, local mussels cooked with chorizo, coriander and tomato and the seafood pancake, filled with a medley of fish and shellfish in a light white sauce, offer more food for thought. A variety of local ales and good wines bring on the mellow mood.

Restaurant at The Belfry Country Hotel
Yarcombe, nr Honiton, EX14 9BD [Map]
The Belfry, a privately owned and run Devon hotel, is renowned for its adaptability and excels when it comes to providing custom built parties for, say, family groups who want to take over the hotel. Owners Paul and Katie Blake make the ideal pair for running a country house hotel of this quality and also open the restaurant to non-residents from Wednesday to Saturday.
Starters feature baked goat's cheese with a hazelnut crust, served with the red onion marmalade made in house, homemade fishcakes and for those who love the old staples, an omelette Arnold Bennett.
Main courses have character and can include pan-fried organic Orkney salmon served with lime butter and fresh herbs, the local lamb, pot roasted with red onions, redcurrants and red wine, or some of the local seabass, filleted, seared and roasted with fresh rosemary and finished with cream.
Puddings are designed to challenge and range from panettone bread and butter pudding, through chocolate and orange spotted dick topped with clotted cream, to individual steamed puddings with golden syrup and clotted cream. Fortunately large areas of attractive moorland in the form of the Blackdown Hills are to hand for those wishing to work out after such indulgence.

Brasserie Restaurant
The White Hart Hotel, The Square, Moretonhampstead, TQ13 8NQ [Map]
This old Inn dating from 1639 has achieved new status and a new owner in the form of Peter de Savary, he of Skobo Castle fame, and a few other places besides. Under his experienced eye it has become once more an important part of the village and offers high class cuisine in very smart but not overpowering surroundings. Head Chef James Brown is skilled at invoking the great classic dishes, using the fine local ingredients and produce.
A wine list put together by the wine buyer for the Tate Gallery group should, if memory serves me well, provide total harmony from the direction of the cellar, whilst musical harmony in the form of jazz trio gives a swing to Sunday lunches, every other week.
Some may see this as a sort of dower house for the nearby Bovey Castle, also transformed by Mr De Savary, and with the degree of luxury offered there it is likely that some potential guests may be more than happy to settle for the White Hart.

The Cedars Inn
Bickington Road, Barnstaple, EX31 2HE [Map]
A former country house set in beautifully landscaped and spacious grounds in a particularly rural part of Devon. The restaurant is open to guests and non-residents alike, with the Conservatory Restaurant offering a very comfortable roost for lunch or dinner.
The menu is quite traditional and starters might include dressed crab, moules marinière, or the chef's home made smooth chicken liver pate served with a port Cumberland sauce and toasted brioche.
Whoever named the main courses should be given a medal even if only for escaping the customary boring descriptions for well known dishes. Behold then a tasty number labelled "collision of land and sea", presumably 'surf and turf' re-invented? A 10oz sirloin steak cooked to your own specification, topped with King prawns and served on a bed of spinach and oyster mushrooms. Braised belly pork with Stilton makes an interesting combination, and sweet chilli chicken is effectively a supreme, sliced and pan fried.
Puddings offer a zesty lemon cheesecake, Belgian waffles or perhaps a fresh fruit brandy snap basket. A robust wine list shows signs of careful selection. Overall this hotel offers good value, with food skilfully assembled and served in tasteful surroundings.

Taylor's Restaurant
8 The Quay, Dartmouth, TQ6 9PS [Map]
Do images of drifting on a cruise, walking on the beach or eating a fine meal at a chic restaurant come to your mind as you plan your next holiday? Then Dartmouth is the place to be at and Taylor's restaurant completes the picture of an enjoyable dining experience. With commanding views overlooking the harbour, the comfortable décor in dark shades of brown adds depth and elegance to the place.
The menu reflects the abundance of fresh fish, and meat from local farms. Start with bang bang chicken in a sweet chilli and sesame dressing or go for Denhay ham with Pecorino cheese and rocket. Mains include roast salmon teriyaki with fried peppers and onions, and rack of Devonshire lamb glazed with honey and wholegrain mustard. Lord Randall's steamed sponge pudding is served with apricots, cinnamon and warm marmalade sauce for afters, while marinated raspberries accompany rich chocolate and orange liqueur truffle.
