Beautiful hued flowers dot the sunny, white exterior of the Piddle Inn, in Dorchester, and the bubbly River Piddle that flows alongside the delightful beer patio adds to the allure of this attractive inn. Three well furnished and comfortable en-suite AA 4 star inn category rooms look out over superbly scenic countryside while the restaurant serves a number of tantalising dishes that are prepared from fresh and locally sourced ingredients.

You could start with Lyme Bay scallops with chorizo, white wine and cream sauce, and move on to local pork loin steak topped with blue vinny. Puddings are delicious and all homemade like sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce. The little ones can enjoy battered chicken bites with chips and peas or baked bean and salad among other choices. A fresh cheese board always has a fine choice. The refreshment list is topped by wines, beers, lagers and real ales served straight from the barrel, along with soft drinks and coffee or tea.

There was less fuss about what a member of the Royal family got up to in his private life in 1877 than there is nowadays. So it was relatively easy for the then Prince of Wales to build a handsome villa on the sunny south coast in which he could enjoy seaside dalliances with Lillie Langtry. The lady created a warmth of welcome which the current owners, in their own particular way, also seek to do.

The Main Hall, now Lillie Restaurant, features stained glass windows, chandeliers, hand carved inglenook fireplace and is overlooked by the magnificent Minstrels Gallery. The fine dining menu could begin with crab, chilli and leek ravioli with a prawn bisque followed by pan seared fillet of beef with chanterelle timbale and truffle mash and ending with cookie crusted profiteroles with Bavarian cream. The six-course Edwardian Banquet held on Saturdays, as featured on BBC Holiday Programme, has been popular for over twenty-five years and is an occasion not to be missed.

Ocean Palace

Undoubtedly one of the best Chinese restaurants in Bournemouth. The cuisine is Peking and Szechuan and there is clear evidence of more than just ordinary care in the preparation of the food, which is cheerfully served by staff who have the wit to know that it may be just another night for them but for their customers it is special. The cuisine is Peking and Szechuan and there is clear evidence of more than just ordinary care in the preparation of the food, which is cheerfully served by staff who have the wit to know that it may be just another night for them but for their customers it is special. It is often not appreciated that Peking cuisine was created in the Imperial Kitchens and now serves as the premier style of food in China. Certainly in the transition from China to Dorset it has not suffered, though if you prefer something spicier and more salt-baked the Szechuan is there to delight you.

Named after the legendary writer Oscar Wilde. Oscars is a relaxed yet formal dining restaurant. The service is very professional yet not intrusive, which is a refreshing change from some of London's finer eateries. The Edwardian décor carries on the spirit of the hotel and you can imagine Oscar Wilde ruminating over the tomes in this former library.

This very straightforward pub offers uncomplicated food cooked before your eyes in the surroundings of a traditional country town hotel. It also works on the principle that anybody who wants to eat after 2.30pm can do it at home, a not unreasonable proposition that must help keep the home skills turning.

Homely dishes such as bubble and squeak come to table adorned with a couple of rashers of home cured local bacon, and kedgeree is a favourite breakfast dish.

Use of local produce is paramount, no mere gesture, and the local rabbits contribute to an excellent casserole, a plate of which will probably render domestic culinary skills in the evening superfluous. The prolific Channel waters offshore provide abundant supplies of crustaceans and there are those who will say that a Lyme Bay crab has no equal for sheer flavour.

Palmers Brewery is the local source of some strikingly different beers, most of which are available in first rate condition at this friendly and completely natural local local.
