Popham's Restaurant
Hunstrete House, Pensford, Hunstrete, Bath, BS39 4NS [Map]
Pophams Restaurant is set within 71 acres of beautiful gardens and deer park in theHunstrete House could be described as the quintessential English Country House Hotel. Only a stone's throw from the Roman city of Bath and the historic port of Bristol, located in the heart of the West Country; the great charm of it is that it feels more like a home than a hotel.
You will find the classic English country house experience there with high standards aimed for, including service from the largely French staff. Under the direction of Chef Matt Lord and his team, the kitchens are in capable hands. He has trained under some of the finest Chefs in the country and this, combined with his dedication and commitment, has earned him and his food much recognition.
Matt Lord's style of food is light, English modern with French influences. Dishes could include: roast saddle of rabbit with its own boudin, crisp carrot parcel, hazelnut dressing or sautéed diver caught scallops, langoustine flavoured risotto to begin with, then main courses like baked fillet of brill with a lemon and parsley crust, light mustard sauce; sautéed venison loin, sautéed potatoes and swede purée, cassis jus or grilled escalope of salmon, scallop tempura, jerusalem artichoke sauce.
With wonderful desserts such as caramel mousse with honey poached pear; thin and crispy apple and pineapple tart, caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream and glazed crème brûlée with strawberry sorbet.
In season much of the produce comes in fresh from the historic Victorian walled garden at Hunstrete House. Good wine list with some excellent contributions from France.

La Flamenca
12A North Parade, Bath, BA2 4AL [Map]
The stone steps leading down into the cellars of the five-storey Georgian townhouse give little indication of what awaits you at La Flamenca and you might just forget you're on North Parade in Bath. Right from the furniture and tiles, to the food and sangria, everything at this tapas bar and restaurant exudes a special Spanish charm without appearing branded or made up.
Spanish meals are long and leisurely and allow for the enjoyment of good company, fine wine, and a healthy cuisine. You could start by ordering any of their tapas dishes that range from spiced Iberian sausage and pork casserole with wine, onion and green pepper, to deep fried calamari and egg, flamenco style with potato, chorizo, peas and tomato sauce. Don't miss the special seafood paella!
Spanish parties and flamenco dancers on the last Sunday of every month ensure customers not only taste but also feel and look at the best of Spanish culture and tradition.

The Alfresco Restaurant
The Bath Spa Hotel, Sydney Road, Bath, BA2 6JF [Map]
It seems somehow appropriate that in a classical town like Bath there should exist a restaurant such as The Villore. Part of the Bath Spa Hotel in Sydney Road and in the former ballroom, The Vellore is located amidst great splendour and space.
Executive Chef Andy Hamer presides over a modern menu that emerges variously as a table d'hote or an a la carte and changes frequently. Emphasis is placed on locally produced ingredients and the meal could start with a warm salad of pan-fried Scottish scallops with crispy vegetables, baby leaves, aged Balsamic and herb-scented oil. The roast chump of West Country lamb comes with garlic potato, haricot beans and smoked bacon with rosemary juices.
I know I'm always ducking the issue and getting wound up about cheese but this one is exceptional - a selection of European cheeses served with a warm Gorgonzola soufflé, chicory and a walnut salad.
For wine over 150 bins are yours from which to select, with a wide range of coverage including China. House wine at £18.
