The Boars Head
The Main Road, Aust, Bristol, BS35 4AX [Map]
This beautiful 16th century grade II listed inn is located in the picturesque village of Aust just a mile from the old Severn Bridge (M48, J1) and only fifteen minutes from the centre of Bristol. The pub has provided hospitality to both locals and travellers for many centuries and continues to do so today.
The Boars Head retains many of the original features of this historic building. This place makes an ideal stop for good food, or even just to relax and unwind with a quiet drink in their charming beer garden, or in front of the roaring log fire on those winter nights.

Severnshed Restaurant
The Grove, Harbourside, Bristol, BS1 4RB [Map]
One of the most unique bar/dining places in the West Country, this was once a boatbuilding shed built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, now it is one of the trendiest venues instead, with a stunning stainless steel bar, restaurant and cafe area where they serve light and informal meals from the innovative Severnshed Express Cafe Menu all day. There is also a terrace for al fresco dining during the summer.
Severnshed has successfully borrowed ideas from all over the world. Choices could include: Asian duck and noodle salad with hoi sin sauce; classic New York Caesar salad with or without marinated fresh anchovies; fish mezze platter of smoked trout, herrings, mackerel and salmon; risotto of lobster and asparagus with parmesan au gratin or carpaccio of beef and that is just to start.
You might follow with roast breast of chicken, stuffed with prawns, lobster bisque sauce and fried potatoe wedges; Arborio risotto, onions, vegetabls with melted reggiano parmesan topping or oven roasted cod fillet with creamy parmesan mash and nutmeg buttered spinach.
Desserts run to Severnshed sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream; lemon curd tart served with crème fraiche; summerfruit crème brûlée or Severnshed Mess - layers of fresh peach and raspberries, crushed meringue and ice cream, topped with cream and butterscotch sauce.
Service is professional and attentive, while the wine list includes some organic choices.

PizzaExpress - Bristol - Regent Street
2 Regent Street, Clifton, Bristol, BS8 4HG [Map]
Pizza Express remains a hugely popular bedrock of casual eating. Its popularity is testimony to the fact that across the country, they have restaurants where you will always be guaranteed a good nosh, with children's tastes being well catered for.
Pizza Express has gone even more Roman, and following the success of that particular example of listening to their public have introduced Romana pizzas, including the scorching Etna and the hearty Siciliana.
These pizzas are now thinner, bigger and crispier, and if that sounds like a marketing line, it is. However, unlike many such lines, this one is true, and their quality is always consistent, though cleverly they have still managed to retain a homemade feel to their pizzas.
As an alternative to pizza, try their pollo pesto - cavatappi pasta with torn chicken breast, mushrooms, red onions and mozzarella in a creamy gruyere, parmesan and pesto sauce and finished with grana padano - or the niçoise salad with mixed leaves, yellowfin tuna, free range egg, green beans, potatoes and tomatoes with olives, anchovies, capers and house dressing.
Many of the big chains have come a long way, and Pizza Express is certainly amongst them. One of the first to be quoted on the Stock Exchange - in 1993 - Pizza Express is not a franchise operation and retains tight control through its own staff.
Their wine list - though short - contains some surprisingly good offerings, especially their intense Australian Chardonnay, and a big, full-bodied Merlot from Cusumano, Sicilia.

The Kensington Arms
35-37 Stanley Road, Redland, Bristol, BS6 6NP [Map]
When the history of the rise (and fall?) of the gastropub comes to be written the authors could hardly have a better example than the Kensington Arms in Bristol.
Here was a sordid, student overrun, local pub. Since family life is centred elsewhere nowadays, and students are not renowned for their wealth, it is hardly surprising that the pub was going downhill - fast.
So along comes the 21st century solution, a transformation in rapid time, the self inflicted expulsion of those disenfranchised locals who still attended for the taking of drink, and a 'let's wait and see' welcome. This is always High Noon time for a new gastropub and the good news is that here it seems to be working despite £3 for a pint of beer but perhaps that will help keep the consumption to a level where theres some room for scholastic intake the following morning.
Grilled sourdough with Ortiz anchovies, red onion and Cornish butter makes a good quality starter. The risotto cake with smoked haddock, spinach and soft boiled egg is well reported upon, which is more than can be said for the skate and chips. Other main courses could include rump of lamb, white coco beans with red chicory and garlic cream, escalope of veal, steamed spinach, Royal Norfolk potatoes and Gorgonzola butter. For dessert hope that the Scottish raspberries with whisky and honey cream are still around.
Time will tell, but hopefully the refreshed Kensington Arms has risen to the spirits of the age and will keep everyone happy. If the food is anything to go by they should not have that much difficulty.
