The Pipe & Slippers
118 Cheltenham Road, Stokes Croft, Bristol, BS6 5RW [Map]
The Pipe & Slippers opened in July 2004 and swiftly became a hit with the locals, also getting itself noticed by both Venue magazine and the Bristol Evening Post, who then bestowed upon it their coveted 'pub of the year' title 2004 and 2005.
The pub combines the cosy feel of a traditional pub with the quality of service and drinks of a modern style bar. With continental lager and wheatbeer on draught, local ales from Bristol Beer Factory and traditional cider from Westons, you don't feel like you have to order one of their excellent bespoke cocktails, but you always have the choice.
Food is simple but good, with pie and mash lovingly prepared by Pie Minister pies and a selection of Portuguese tapas from a local chef. You can, if it floats your boat, be treated to a showcase of Bristol's finest DJs on Fridays and Saturdays.

Okra - Bristol
6 Chandos Road, Bristol, BS6 6PE [Map]
A Bristol yearling which seems to be settling in well, offering not only the customary Moroccan items but interesting and unusual ideas from Spain, Portugal, Libya and Turkey. Main courses such as lamb shank khaleta which comes in a fennel, orange and puy lentil chorba, and since it follows that essential precept of this type of cooking, a good slow process, it is all that you could wish for. The final touch could be the Autumn berry and Pimms syllabub with coconut Ghoriba biscuit. The surroundings are suitably low key, the wine list is entirely in keeping with the cuisine and the menu is just the right length.

Planet Pizza
38 Whiteladies Road, Clifton, Bristol, BS8 2NT [Map]
Planet Pizza describes itself as a 'vibrant restaurant serving out of this world pizzas and heavenly salads in a friendly setting.' Now, whilst the pizzas are not exactly out of this world, they are certainly enjoyable and the atmosphere is definitely relaxed and friendly.
Outside there's a spacious al fresco dining area, or diners can eat in the small and cosy interior, decorated with a number of interesting contemporary photographs that are for sale should you be in a buying mood.
Main course salad choices include artichoke and Parmesan, roast vegetables and couscous, or grilled goat's cheese. Pizza names follow a theme of planets across the galaxy such as Jupiter, which is smoked Italian sausage, Spanish chorizo, spring onions and mozzarella pizza. Or there's Venus with: cherry tomatoes with olives and mozzarella, or alternatively you can create your own pizza exactly to your liking.
The wine list is short but interesting enough and special deals include two pizzas for the price of one Sunday to Wednesday and a takeaway service.

Gourmet Burger Kitchen - Bristol, Cabot Circus
Unit SU71, Glass Walk, Cabot Circus, Broadmead, Bristol, BS1 3BT [Map]
Gourmet Burger Kitchen was the brainchild of three New Zealanders, who craved after the way that food tasted back home. The chain was instrumental in changing the perception of many people who saw the traditional burger purely as a fast food option; instead they are now seen as more sophisticated products, made using fresh, good quality ingredients.
Their first outlet opened in Battersea and today there are forty-one serving scrumptious burgers. Chef Peter Gordon believes in using innovative combinations, with good quality English chicken and Aberdeen Angus Scotch beef among the ingredients, to make nutritious and convenient to eat fare. They offer chorizo and sweet potato, lamb and minted relish, or the vegetarian portabella mushroom among others. GBK sauces and accompaniments add to their taste.
The menu has nearly thirty different choices and if you feel like biting into pure beef, do try their classic burger with salad and relish - available with or without cheese, this is served with sauces like smoked mayo, spicy satay, fresh chilli and Thai red curry, lending the meal varying degrees of spice.
Some, like the Kiwi, are made using unusual raw materials such as beetroot, fried egg and pineapple, while for fans of chicken, the grilled breast with streaky bacon, salad and avocado is a delicious combination. There are a surprising number of burgers suitable for vegetarians with versions made from puy lentils, potato, green curry or aubergine served with goats' cheese and sun blushed tomatoes. Fresh fruit juices, soft drinks and milkshakes are alcohol free options.
A welcome list of wines and beers complete the picture of a relaxed and modern environment as Gourmet Burger King excels in making the humble burger taste so good.

Racks Bar & Kitchen
St Pauls Road, Clifton, Bristol, BS8 1LX [Map]
Racks Bar and Kitchen has plenty of admirers and rightly so as Racks have been a part of Clifton's culinary scene for over 25 years. Much of their popularity lies in several factors that make this a great place to eat and drink, from the warm interior with soft lighting and fresh food, to the wallet-friendly prices and attentive service.
This is an all-day place where you could pop in and choose from their full repertoire of gourmet sandwiches, the popular Racks prime beef burger or brochettes of coffee-pepper crusted New York rump steak, lemon and herb spiced chicken and scallops and tiger prawns with Thai noodle salad. Main courses arrive in the form of honey and mustard pork sausages, roasted duck pie and char-grilled balsamic swordfish steak with warm niçoise salad.
Spend a lazy summer afternoon at the Racks terrace enjoying a glass of Pimms and watching the world go by, and when the sun fades into the horizon, the place is fully heated and emanates a warm glow of delicate lights accompanied by soft music.
